Mountain West meets Conference USA in week one college football action as the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers visit Hawaii.
Both teams played last week but sustained totally different outcomes. WKU topped Austin Peay 38-27. Meanwhile, rebuilding Hawaii was trashed 63-10 by perennial SEC walkover Vanderbilt.
For those reasons, Western Kentucky enters its latest assignment as -12.5 point favorites. With neither program a defensive powerhouse, the total is set at 67.5
Western Kentucky HIlltoppers
Led by the nation’s #2-ranked offense, WKU finished 9-5 last season. Some downturn may occur for the HIlltoppers this Fall, though after losing all-everything offensive producers Bailey Zappe (QB), Jerreth Sterns (WR), Mitchell Tinsley (WR), Noah Whittingham (RB), and standout defenders DeAngelo Malone and Antwon Kincade.
That stated, the core of Austin Reed (QB), Michael Matthison (WR), Daewood Davis (WR), Malachi Corley (WR), Dalvin Smith (WR), Kyle Robichaux (RB), Davion-Ervin Poindexter (RB), and a seasoned offensive line should have no trouble putting up points.
The HIlltoppers did take a defensive step back this offseason, however, after failing to strike fear into opponents last fall. If not for strong secondary play, WKU could’ve faceplanted vs. Austin Peay.
Against the Governors, timely second-half performances from Reed (20/34 att, 4 td, 1 int), Davis (6 rec, 124 yds), Corley (5 rec, 3 td) and the defense’s 5.5 sacks and two picks saved the day -but couldn’t cover the spread.
Those ATS results may be similar this weekend if WKU allows deep passes and another poor showing against the run.
Hawaii Rainbow Warriors
It’s rebuild time for rookie head coach Timmy Chang and the Rainbow Warriors. The hope is Chang, a former prolific Hawaii passer, can finally restore his program’s once feared scoring attack.
That’s easier said than done, however, after the Warriors lost offensive standouts Chevan Cordeiro (QB), Nick Mardner (WR), Calvin Turner (WR), and Dae Dae Hunter (RB). The team’s defense -which allowed 446 yards and 32 points per game last season- and began this year with a lackluster effort, is in similar disrepair.
The one bright spot for Hawaii is its offensive line. Versus Vandy, featured Rainbow Warriors tailback Dedrick Parson used every added seam to gain Hawaii’s lone end-zone trot. Unfortunately, the quarterback combo of Brayden Schager and Joey Yellen couldn’t turn 250 passing yards into their own scoring fortune.
Further, Parson had no additional backfield help -and his two fumbles actually nixed his strong effort. Overall, Hawaii fumbled four times and allowed 601 total yards (404 rushing), while recording no sacks or QB hurries versus a team that’s won just three games this decade.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- Hilltoppers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games after allowing less than 170 yards passing in their previous game.
- Hilltoppers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following an ATS loss
- Rainbow Warriors are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games.
- Rainbow Warriors are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 vs. CUSA.
- Rainbow Warriors are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games following a double-digit loss at home.
4* Free Western Kentucky Hilltoppers vs. Hawaii Rainbow Warriors NCAA Betting Final Analysis:
I’ll begin this segment by relating that I’m not impressed by either side’s defense. Yet, behind DII champion Austin Reed’s arm, WKU appears poised for another big offensive showing on Hawaii’s home turf.
Meanwhile, the reconstructing Rainbow Warriors should gain a few more points this week vs. Western Kentucky’s mediocre defenders. As for the odds in this Saturday’s nightcap between WKU and Hawaii, expect the HIlltoppers’ fast-paced attack to produce a -12.5 cover.
4* Free Western Kentucky Hilltoppers vs. Hawaii Rainbow Warriors NCAA Betting Pick: WKU -12.5
