The Cougars are coming off a 26-6 loss to Fresno State, while the Aggies fell 37-18 at Boise State.

Wood caught seven passes for 102 yards and a TD against Boise State. He’s capable of making defenders pay for loose coverage, particularly when the Aggies create space underneath. That’s one matchup Washington State can’t afford to overlook.
Defensively, Utah State has recorded seven sacks and recovered two fumbles.
The Aggies have struggled to turn occasional impact plays into consistent stops.
Mendenhall needs better tackling and fewer missed assignments, especially against an opponent capable of extending plays with its running game.
Cougars Stats
Washington State has struggled to establish a dependable offensive identity. The Cougars have had difficulty sustaining drives against FBS competition.
Running back Kirby Vorhees has 235 rushing yards and two TD’s, while Maxwell Woods has added 188 yards. Both showed their potential against Duquesne, when Washington State rushed for 316 yards as a team. Finding that balance against conference opponents remains the challenge.

Washington State has covered seven of its last eight as an underdog and five of seven on the road. I like those trends, but the number is what gets my attention.
I don’t need the Cougars to suddenly become an offensive powerhouse. Give me decent field position, fewer turnovers and enough sustained drives to keep Utah State from pulling away.
I’m taking the points because Utah State hasn’t earned my trust as a favorite.
The Aggies can control stretches without covering this spread. I’ve seen plenty of mediocre favorites win games and still leave their backers staring at a losing ticket.
Washington State has also covered 18 of 29 following a loss. That fits my bounce-back angle, although I’m not pretending these Cougars are suddenly world-beaters.
I expect an ugly, competitive game that stays within one possession. Give me Wazzu +5.5.
