The Washington Huskies will travel down to Berkeley and take on the California Golden Bears from FTX Field this Saturday night on ESPN. Washington will come into this one as the seven-point road favorites here, with the total opening at 54.5.
HISTORY: Washington and California have crossed paths in nearly every season since 1915. The Huskies lead the all-time series 55-41 after winning last year’s meeting, 31-24.
Washington Huskies
Washington jumped out to a 3-0 start in that included a strong non-conference win over Michigan State at home. UDub opened Pac-12 play with a 18-point win over Stanford, before they entered the Rose Bowl as favorites in Week 5. The Huskies lost to UCLA, and the hangover from their first defeat showed the following weekend in Tempe, when they lost to a spiraling Arizona State team in the fourth quarter. A return to Seattle did them justice last weekend, but nothing came easy.
In Week 7, Washington defeated Arizona at home, 49-39, failing to cover for the third week in a row.
Washington scores 42.1 points per game, while allowing 28.5 ppg.
Michael Penix Jr. has been a star and now that he’s out of Bloomington, it’s been on full display. The Indiana transfer has struggled with health over the past three seasons, but he’s finally put it all together here in Seattle. Penix has surpassed the 300-yard mark each time out, and he threw for a season-high 516 yards in the win over Arizona last Saturday.
Penix leads the Pac-12 with 2,560 passing yards with 20 touchdowns to four interceptions.
Wayne Taulapapa came over from UVA’s Air Raid in the transfer portal, and has capitlized on the lead role early. Taulapapa leads the team in touches and rushing yards (424) though the first half of the season, while Cameron Davis is among Pac-12 leaders with nine touchdown runs.
Penix’s connection with Rome Odunze has been deadly this season. The sophomore wideout has surpassed the 115-yard mark in each of the last four games, posting a career-high 169 yards and scoring twice in the win last weekend. Odunze leads UW in receptions (44), receiving yards (693), and touchdowns (6). Jalen McMillan has been consistent alongside him, catching four passes or more in each game this season. McMillan is second on the team with 37 catches for 530 yards.
Cal Golden Bears
Cal has jumped out to an ideal 2-0 start, and they nearly upset Notre Dame in South Bend in Week 3. The Golden Bears bounced back and defeated Arizona in their Pac-12 opener the following Saturday, but things turned for the worse following a loss to Washington State.
In Week 7, Cal lost to Colorado, 20-13, giving the Buffs their first win of the season.
California is scoring 23.7 points per game, while allowing 21.6 ppg.
Jack Plummer has come in and grasped the offense quickly. Plummer started 17 games at Purdue, and he’s brought steady QB play to Cal. Last weekend was a low moment, and the UW defense will be a tough bunch to bounce back against here. Plummer is up to 1,509 passing yards with nine touchdowns to three interceptions through six starts at Berkeley.
Jaydn Ott is doing his best Jahvid Best impression early. The redshirt freshman has received the majority of the work here in his first season, and after a 284-yard outburst versus Arizona, he’s ready to get going at home again. Ott leads Cal with 580 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
Plummer has spread the ball out pretty well thus far. Jeremiah Hunter has totaled team leads in catches (30) and receiving yards (448), after a 109-yard outing against Wazzu. Freshman wideouts J.Michael Sturdivant is second on the team with 29 catches and 341 receiving yards.
