The Wake Forest Demon Deacons hit the road to take on the Rice Owls on Friday night. Wake Forest is a heavy favorite in this contest.
Will the Owls pull out the home upset or will the Demon Deacons take care of business like most expect?
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons began the season the right way with a 38-35 victory against the Utah State Aggies last Saturday. It was a dangerous ending for them as the Aggies had the ball at their 31 with a minute to play before turning the ball over. Quarterback Jamie Newman was incredible going for 401 passing yards, completing 34/47 of his passes and three touchdowns. The signal-caller also had a rushing touchdown in the win.
Cade Carney led the Wake Forest ground attack as he had 105 rushing yards on 25 carries. Christian Beal-Smith added 38 yards and a touchdown.
Sage Surratt had a huge game with 158 receiving yards and a touchdown. Kendall Hinton caught nine receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown.
Despite giving up 596 total yards Wake Forest made some timely defensive plays. They forced three Jordan Love interceptions in the contest. Justin Strnad had a nice performance with 12 tackles.
It was a big way to begin the season for Wake Forest who will have some tough games this season.
Unlike Wake Forest, the Rice Owls kicked off their season with a tough loss. Rice fell 14-7 in a defensive war against Army. A nine-minute touchdown drive in the fourth quarter by the Black Knights led by their rushing attack was the difference in the game. The Owls had a shot to tie the game before turning the ball over on downs with less than a minute to play on Army’s 26 yard line.
It was a hard game to watch from a quarterback perspective. Rice quarterback Wiley Green had 62 passing yards while Army quarterback had 52 yards. Both quarterbacks had a combined 22 pass attempts. It was all about the ground game. The Owls were led by Nashshon Ellerbe (103 yards), and Aston Walter (72 yards). Not going to Ellerbe who did his damage in only nine carries could’ve cost the Owls.
Rice’s kicker Will Harrison missed two key field goals in the contest. The kicks were of 26 and 44 yards. Antonio Montero (11 tackles), and Anthony Ekpe (8 tackles) had good performances on the defense.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends

Free Week 2 NCAA Football Pick: Rice +18.5
Rice won’t be easy to dominate on their home field. Their defense will make the Demon Deacons work on offense. The difference in the game will be a big edge Wake Forest has under center with Newman. Newman won’t have the huge game he had in week 1 but he will be good enough against a solid defense.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Rice +18.5 / Strong Lean Under
I expect Rice’s ground attack to keep them in the game as they will shorten the game. Look for Wake Forest to win easily but they won’t cover a big number in this spot. Take the points for Rice.
