The matchup between Virginia Military Institute and Akron on Saturday is the typical matchup that Akron looks to play week 1.
After a long span of time where Akron was getting beat down in games, they have started to play much better in the most recent seasons.
Akron is coming off one of their best seasons where they were victorious in their bowl game. VMI is coming into the season with a lot of experience where they return 16 starters from last season.
Both teams will look to start this season off on a positive note.
The VMI offense was up and down at times, but most of the credit for success goes to quarterback Al Cobb. Cobb is looking to become VMI’s all-time leading passer this season where he currently stands in second.
He led the Southern Conference in passing yards per game (273.6) last season while throwing for 2,736 yards and 14 touchdowns on the season. Cobb comes into the season with two receivers that were big time last season.
Aaron Sanders was first team all-Southern Conference with 84 catches for 892 yards in 2015. Pacing him is Dane Forlines coming in after he caught 53 passes for 690 yards last season.
The VMI defense seemed to have struggled in the 11 games they played last season, but they look to improve with the 8 starters they bring back this season.
VMI was absolutely drilled last season on the ground as they gave up 203 yards per game rushing last season and gave up a total of 24 touchdowns on the season.
They were better defending the pass last season, but still wasn’t anything to brag about. VMI gave up 238.2 yards per game to opposing quarterbacks to go along with 17 touchdowns and they were only able to intercept 4 passes on the season.
They will have their hands full with the Akron offense on Saturday.
The Akron offense will have a big boost with transfer Warren Ball from Ohio State coming into the mix. Ball was not a key contributor for the Buckeyes, but with him moving from the B1G to MAC will be a big difference.
Akron returns quarterback Thomas Woodson who had a good season last year. Woodson threw for 2,202 yards and 16 touchdowns while running for 591 and 3 more scores.
The Akron offense will look to put up a big score against VMI.
The Akron defense is held up by their defensive line who is returning two other players that were former Buckeye natives.
Jamal Marcus and Se’Von Pittman are two defensive lineman who have excelled in their career after leaving Columbus, and they will look to continue their success and force some needed pass rush against this tough QB in Cobb.

Free Week 1 NCAA Football Prediction
This is the typical game that Akron comes out and puts a hurting on a team before they go play power 5 conference schools and get beat down themselves.
I look for this score to go over on Saturday.
Akron’s defense will not be able to stop the high powered VMI offense led by Cobb.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: VMI ATS
I also see Warren Ball being very tough to stop offensively, and Akron will be able to come out with a comfortable win at home to start the season. Look for this score to be high as Akron will pull it out Saturday.
