Hokies vs. Terrapins Gameday
Virginia Tech heads to College Park Saturday night for its first road game of the 2026 season. The Hokies are 2-0 after beating Old Dominion 44-21, while Maryland owns the same record after a convincing 38-14 road victory over UConn. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM ET on FS1.
James Franklin’s first Virginia Tech team has certainly handled the opening assignment. The Hokies crushed VMI 73-3 before building a 34-6 halftime lead against Old Dominion and cruising from there.
Virginia Tech has spent two weeks bullying visitors; now somebody finally makes the Hokies leave Blacksburg.
Maryland has been every bit as comfortable. The Terrapins opened with a 62-0 shutout of Hampton, then produced 475 yards while beating UConn by 24 on the road. Mike Locksley’s team has now won 20 consecutive non-conference games, the longest active streak in the FBS.
Saturday also renews a regional series that’s been around since 1919.
Maryland embarrassed Virginia Tech 54-10 in the 2021 Pinstripe Bowl, although almost everything surrounding these programs has changed since then. The Terps have won the last three meetings, while Virginia Tech still leads the all-time series.

Virginia Tech opened around a 1.5-point road favorite before the market moved toward the Hokies. Tech is now laying approximately 2.5 to 3 points, with a moneyline around -145 to -150. The total remains 53.5.
Both teams have rewarded bettors so far.
Virginia Tech is 2-0 against the spread after covering against VMI and Old Dominion. Both Hokies games have also cleared the total, although 73 points against VMI can make an Over ticket considerably less stressful.
Maryland is also 2-0 against the spread.
The Terrapins haven’t merely won their first two games; they’ve won each by at least 24 points. Maryland shut out Hampton before going to UConn and controlling the Huskies 38-14 behind 475 yards and 27 first downs.
Now somebody finally gets resistance.
Virginia Tech has scored 117 points and Maryland has scored 100, but both defenses have been just as impressive. Tech leads the nation with 12 sacks, while Maryland’s 10 sacks lead the Big Ten and rank among the best totals in the country.
Terrapins Stats
Maryland has generated 100 points through two games while allowing only 14. The Terps followed their 62-0 opener by producing 475 yards and controlling possession for more than 35 minutes at UConn.
Malik Washington has been the centerpiece.
Washington completed 34 of 41 passes for 347 yards and two touchdowns against UConn. He completed a school-record 18 consecutive passes during the game and hasn’t thrown an interception this season.
Washington completed 18 straight passes last week, which is usually a decent sign the quarterback has found a rhythm.
Maryland hasn’t needed him to do everything.
Iverson Howard and Harry Dalton III helped the Terps rush for 125 yards and three touchdowns against UConn. Na’eem Abdul-Rahim Gladding added eight catches for 130 yards and a score, while Chris Durr Jr. finished with 10 receptions for 103 yards and another touchdown.
The defense may be the more interesting matchup.
Maryland has recorded 10 sacks through two games, the most in the Big Ten. DD Holmes has 2.5, while Sidney Stewart, Zion Elee and Derrick LeBlanc are part of a front that held UConn to 223 total yards.
The Terps now return to a sold-out SECU Stadium. Their 20-game non-conference winning streak gets a substantially more serious test Saturday night.
Hokies Stats
Virginia Tech has scored 117 points through two games, including 44 against Old Dominion last week. The Hokies piled up a 34-6 halftime lead and scored on all seven trips into the red zone.
Ethan Grunkemeyer had his best game in a Tech uniform.
He completed 31 of 42 passes for 327 yards and two touchdowns, setting career highs in completions, attempts and passing yards. Luke Reynolds was his favorite target, catching two touchdowns while posting career highs in receptions and receiving yards.
The defense has been downright rude.
Virginia Tech followed 18 tackles for loss against VMI with another 14 against Old Dominion. The Hokies added seven sacks last week, giving them 12 through two games, and recovered three first-half fumbles.
Those takeaways helped turn the game quickly.
Tyson Flowers returned one fumble 14 yards for a touchdown, while Que’Sean Brown added a 79-yard punt-return score. Virginia Tech has been creating points without always asking its offense to drive the length of the field.
Jeffrey Overton Jr. gives the Hokies another option on the ground. With Maryland bringing 10 sacks of its own into Saturday, keeping Grunkemeyer out of obvious passing situations becomes considerably more important in his first road start.

Hokies vs. Terrapins QB Matchup
Malik Washington has opened the season without an interception and is coming off one of his sharpest games at Maryland. He threw for 347 yards and two touchdowns at UConn while completing 82.9% of his passes.
That included 18 straight completions.
Washington and Grunkemeyer have combined for seven touchdown passes without an interception, so somebody has been doing the homework.
Washington has thrown for 533 yards and three touchdowns through two games. His ability to get the ball out quickly becomes particularly important against a Virginia Tech defense leading the country with 12 sacks.
Ethan Grunkemeyer has been equally clean with the football.
The Hokies starter has thrown for 551 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. His 327-yard performance against Old Dominion showed more than efficiency, as Virginia Tech repeatedly pushed the ball downfield while converting every red-zone opportunity.
This is his first road start of the season.
Maryland has 10 sacks and a sold-out crowd waiting for him, so the environment changes in a hurry. Grunkemeyer doesn’t need another 327-yard night, but avoiding negative plays against that pass rush could determine whether Tech’s offense travels as well as its first two box scores suggest.
Hokies vs. Terrapins bottom line: both quarterbacks have been clean and both pass rushes have been nasty, so Saturday should tell us which perfect September record has been built for something more serious than the opening act.

Maryland deserves respect at home. The Terps have won 20 straight non-conference games, and Malik Washington just threw for 347 yards at UConn.
That streak is exactly why three points feels important.
Virginia Tech has been nastier up front, piling up 12 sacks through two games.
The Hokies aren’t living entirely on defense, either. Ethan Grunkemeyer threw for 327 yards against Old Dominion, while Tech scored on all seven red-zone trips and built a 34-6 halftime lead.
Maryland can rush the passer too.
The Terps have 10 sacks, so Grunkemeyer isn’t getting a relaxing first road start. Still, Virginia Tech has generated more explosive offense and forced five fumbles, giving James Franklin’s team multiple ways to create separation.
The 2021 Pinstripe Bowl has almost nothing to do with Saturday, unless somebody kept the receipt.
This number has moved from Virginia Tech -1.5 to around -2.5/-3. I’ll lay the field goal with the deeper offense and more disruptive front.
