Both teams are 2-0, but Saturday represents a considerable upgrade from last week’s competition.
West Virginia is also 2-0 after beating Coastal Carolina 31-24 and UT Martin 52-7. The Mountaineers have scored 83 points, with their rushing attack doing most of the damage.
Virginia leads the all-time series 12-10-1, although these programs haven’t met since the Cavaliers won 48-22 in the 2002 Continental Tire Bowl. Funny enough, that game was also played in Charlotte.

Defensively, West Virginia has allowed 31 points and forced four turnovers.
Coastal Carolina scored 24 in the opener, but the Mountaineers responded by holding UT Martin to seven.

Here is my Cavaliers Mountaineers free pick: Over 53.5 is my play Saturday night in Charlotte. Virginia has scored 93 points through two games, while West Virginia has put up 83. Neither offense has needed much convincing to find the end zone.
The Mountaineers are built around the run, and Michael Hawkins Jr. is part of the problem. Hawkins and Cam Cook have combined for 393 rushing yards and six touchdowns, giving WVU two legitimate ways to chew up a defense.
Both offenses have spent September moving the chains like somebody forgot to tell them punts are allowed.
Virginia can answer quickly. Beau Pribula has completed 84% of his passes for 317 yards and five touchdowns, and the Cavaliers have already shown they can score through the air or on the ground.
West Virginia allowed 24 points to Coastal Carolina in the opener. That matters more to me than holding UT Martin to seven last week.
Both teams have trends pointing toward points, but I don’t need to make this complicated. Virginia has gone Over in high-total spots, while WVU arrives with 601 rushing yards and enough explosiveness to keep this moving.
The neutral field helps, too. Both quarterbacks have been efficient enough to punish short fields or busted coverages.
Fifty-three and a hook isn’t cheap, but these offenses have earned the number.
