UTEP Miners vs. Oklahoma Sooners Odds & Last 5
The betting odds have Oklahoma entering this Week 1 matchup as a massive favorite.
The consensus spread is set at -41.5 for the Sooners. Meanwhile, the total points line for this matchup sits at 50.5.
UTEP finished last season by going through a difficult closing stretch. The Miners lost their final five games, including a 61-31 defeat against Delaware. On the other hand, Oklahoma closed its regular season with victories before eventually falling to Alabama.
The most recent head-to-head meeting between UTEP and Oklahoma came back in 2022. The Sooners rolled to a 45-13 victory in that matchup. That history, combined with Oklahoma’s current rankings, creates a challenging Week 1 assignment for UTEP.
Sooners Stats
The Oklahoma Sooners have delivered a strong defensive performance throughout the season.
Oklahoma ranks first with 42 sacks and sits inside the top 10 with nine interceptions. However, the Sooners have been less effective offensively, ranking 64th with 317 points scored.
Quarterback John Mateer has been one of the key players leading Oklahoma with 2,578 passing yards and 12 touchdowns. Wide receiver Isaiah Sategna III has also made a significant impact with 948 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
Oklahoma has experienced a mixture of wins and losses in its recent games. The Sooners lost to Alabama in the postseason, but they finished the regular season with victories against LSU and Missouri. Those results show a team capable of competing while still dealing with some consistency issues.
The Oklahoma defense remains its biggest strength, but the offense needs more production. The Sooners’ rushing attack ranks 102nd, leaving clear room for improvement. With Trell Harris sidelined because of a knee injury, Oklahoma will need other players to step into larger roles.

Miners Stats
The UTEP Miners have experienced a challenging season on both sides of the football.
UTEP scored 280 points to rank 78th overall. The passing attack generated 2,595 yards to rank 81st, but the ground game struggled with 1,397 rushing yards, placing the Miners 112th.
The UTEP defense surrendered 365 points, ranking 137th. However, the Miners were effective at creating turnovers, ranking 6th with five interceptions and 8th with seven fumbles recovered. Their ability to pressure quarterbacks also stood out, with 28 sacks ranking 14th.
UTEP has struggled recently while losing each of its last five games. Against Delaware, the Miners generated 344 passing yards but managed only 26 rushing yards. Turnovers were another major problem, with UTEP throwing five interceptions in that game alone.
Injuries have also hit the Miners hard, with key players Nate Dyman and Jaden Smith out for the season. Those absences have added another challenge to UTEP’s struggles on the field. As the Miners prepare for their next matchup, finding ways to overcome those issues will be essential.

Miners vs. Sooners QB Matchup
John Mateer returns to lead the Oklahoma Sooners at quarterback for the 2026 season.
Mateer appeared in 11 games last season and threw for 2,578 yards, ranking first on his team. He also recorded 12 passing touchdowns and 10 interceptions, bringing plenty of experience back to the Oklahoma offense.
Michael Hawkins Jr., now with the West Virginia Mountaineers, appeared in only 2 games for Oklahoma last season.
During that limited action, Hawkins threw for 167 yards and 3 touchdowns. However, he did not record an interception before eventually moving on from the Sooners.
UTEP enters the 2026 season with transfer EJ Colson Jr. officially named as its starting quarterback.
Colson arrives from UIW after throwing for 2,142 yards and 16 touchdowns with only four interceptions in 2025. He also added 287 rushing yards and three touchdowns, giving the Miners a dual-threat option under center.
Malachi Nelson, who played 6 games for UTEP last season, is now with the Syracuse Orange.
Nelson accumulated 1,163 passing yards and threw 8 touchdowns for the Miners. He also recorded 9 interceptions before transferring to Syracuse following the 2025 season.
UTEP Miners vs. Oklahoma Sooners bottom line: UTEP enters Week 1 trying to move past a difficult season and five-game losing streak, while nationally ranked Oklahoma brings the stronger recent track record and another opportunity to control this matchup at home.

Miners Sooners Free Pick: Oklahoma -41.5
Here is my Miners Sooners free pick: OU is laying a monster number, but this matchup has enough separation for me to consider it. The Sooners should control things from the opening kick.
Oklahoma has won 19 of its last 23 home games, and that home-field dominance matters when we’re asking a favorite to cover 41.5 points. The Sooners have repeatedly handled weaker opponents in Norman.
UTEP finished just 2-10 last season and closed the year with 5 consecutive losses. The Miners allowed 365 points across those 12 games, an average of more than 30 per contest. Bad combination.
Oklahoma’s defensive pressure and UTEP’s inability to consistently compete last season make this huge spread easier for me to lay.
Additionally, Oklahoma led the nation with 49 sacks last season, and that pass rush could make life miserable for a UTEP offense stepping into a difficult environment. Short fields could follow.
Can the Miners score enough to protect 41.5 points? I’m skeptical.
However, laying more than 6 touchdowns always creates some late-game risk, especially once the favorite starts emptying the bench. OU has enough defensive disruption and overall talent to build the kind of early margin needed to survive that concern.
My college football betting system points to Oklahoma -41.5, and I’m trusting the Sooners to turn the talent gap into a comfortable cover.
