The UTEP Miners and North Texas Mean Green find themselves facing losing seasons, although some experts might have expected it from the outfit out of El Paso this year. At 1 – 6 and following up a 1 – 11 season in 2018, head coach Dana Dimel might have to respond to a few more questions should we see a repeat of that in 2019.
While those same pundits were expecting the Miners to struggle in 2019 before the season kicked off, the expectations following up a 9 – 4 season were on the Mean Green. There was some pre-season chatter towards this team possibly contending for the MAC West Division title.
Now at 3 – 5 with 4 games remaining this season, North Texas needs to run out the schedule with wins to likely gain a post-season bid. It might take more than a common 6 – 6 record to qualify this team for the post-season, as the committee voters will have to weigh-in that win over Abilene Christian to start the 2019 campaign.

UTEP Miners
There is not much positive to take from the 2019 UTEP Miners season, although they didn’t win their first game last year until week 9 of the 2018 campaign.
Well. this year’s lone win came early, and that was opening day against that big-time Houston Baptist program that everyone fears in FBS. That’s it, so if you came here to see me sugarcoat something pertaining to this UTEP team? You have arrived at the wrong site!
You do know there are 130 FBS programs, right? Well, The Miners are hanging around at 120th in the nation in both points scored (18.1 PPG) and total yards (308.9 YPG) and UTEP ranks 117th in the land in passing offense (166.4 YPG).
Can we call this a running game? The Miners are averaging 3.5 yards a carry, and their leading rusher, Treyvon Hughes, has only accumulated 422 yards on the ground.
Brandon Jones has some ability with his legs to keep the offense on the field at times, but his arm has only brought 628 passing yards to the party in 2019.
Let’s not talk about the defense either and save yourself the time with having to sit through more ugly stats!

North Texas Mean Green
When QB Mason Fine returned for his senior season, the Mean Green were at least expecting to win 9 games for a third straight year under head coach Seth Littrell.
Keep in mind that Littrell took over a program that finished 2015 1 – 11, and yet he has managed to land a bowl berth in his 3 seasons manning the Denton, TX sidelines. (We’re all still trying to figure out how that 2016 team ended up in a bowl game, but that’s another story)
Fine is having a relatively decent season stats-wise, but at 3 – 5 we can only think that the expectations were much higher than this for 2019. Fine has accumulated 2,277 passing yards in his final season with the Mean Green, and the 20 TD passes look good on paper as well.
North Texas has the 19th ranked passing offense in the country and their 460 yards per game has them sitting at 27th in the land.
The running game needs a certain boost, as this is not a balanced offense and no one really expected there to be one. Fine will throw the ball to anyone who gets open, and that’s the end of that story.

Well, let’s assume that some points are coming our way, and further expect these defenses to struggle to slow anyone down. Even the Mean Green D has been lethargic at best, so this should be a good opportunity for UTEP to find some cohesion on offense.
The Over 59 goes in as the play to make on this contest.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: The Line shows North Texas favored at -23 with a 59 on the total.
