The Utah Utes opened their PAC 12 schedule with a loss to Washington, 21 – 7, last weekend at home. The three turnovers for the Utes were certainly detrimental to their result and, in all honesty, the Utes’ offense looks a little out of sorts this season.
Not to be outdone, the Cougars are also coming off a conference opening loss to USC last weekend. The Cougars let USC freshman QB JT Daniels have a career night, despite not looking Pac 12-ready coming into that game.
Keep in mind that the Utes started last season 4 – 0 and barely found their way to a bowl game in 2017. Had they lost to Colorado on the final day of the regular season, the Heart of Dallas Bowl would not have called Coach Whittingham with any good news.
Huntley looked rather pedestrian in his outing against Washington last weekend, although no one around him really put up any stats either. The junior QB out of Dania, Florida went 20 for 38 with only 138 passing yards in the 21 – 7 loss to the Huskies.
At least Husky QB Jake Browning didn’t exactly have a stat-packed afternoon himself in the affair. (14 for 24 with 1 TD – 1 INT and 155 yards passing for Jake)
Regardless, the Utes should have a little easier of a weekend going up against a Mike Leach defense.
Utes QB Tyler Huntley promised big things this year for this team as Spring practices began.
Huntley was quoted in Lindy’s College Football preview magazine as saying, “I feel like I have improved in the off-season, and I feel like my team got tremendously better around me too, it’s going to be a big year.”
Washington State Cougars
Speaking of Mike Leach, please do not combine the words Washington State and defense in the same sentence if you can help it. Yes, I will have myself checked later for doing it right there, but seriously, the defensive back field for the Cougars is an absolute disaster waiting to happen.
Anyone who caught the USC vs. Washington State game last weekend watched #2 and #4 give up more defensive penalties then I have personally ever seen. I even tweeted to Coach Leach and the Cougars during the game and told them that if they leave those two kids out there much longer, it will be a loooong season.
The two defensive backs were involved with holding, pass interference and illegal use of hands penalties all throughout the game. When your cornerbacks yield more yardage in penalties than your offense can make up for, we gots ourselves some issues!
Now, of course, let’s not forget about the impact of the untimely death of Tyler Hilinsky. The Cougars obviously don’t have Tyler’s brother out there, who was thought to possibly take over as the signal-caller for this season.
Another impact it had on the field was the emergence of Gardner Minshew! You might want to check out what this kid can do to help an offense move the ball, because he is someone to watch, for sure.
Had it not been for the complete defensive debacle last weekend, the Cougars would have hosted a much different press conference than they ended up doing.
The line is set showing Utah as -2.5 favorites, with a 50 on the total. Hi, I said that total is 50, and we’ll just move on.

This is where we offer a final analysis, and I think you get where I am going here. 50? I mean the line setters offered a straight 50 in a Washington State game, and that is just unbelievable to me.
There are times you feel good about suggesting a play, and then there is this situation. Take that Over 50 and don’t even bother with who wins or loses the football game.
