Utah State hits the road to take on Wake Forest in this Mountain West/ACC clash in North Carolina. Both of these teams exceded expectations last season and will look to start off their 2019 campaigns with a win against a formidable opponent.

Utah State Aggies

Utah State returns their stud quarterback, Jordan Love, to an offense that ranked 2nd in the nation, scoring just over 45 points per contest.

Love threw for 3,567 yards and 32 touchdowns and just 6 interceptions. The dual-threat QB also added 7 touchdowns on the ground as well.

Those offensive numbers may be difficult to reproduce though, as the Aggies find themselves with plenty of new faces on the offensive side of the football. The Aggies graduated 4 of their starting offensive linemen and 3 of their top wide receivers.

The offensive overhaul doesn’t stop there, as they will be without their leading rusher Darwin Thompson (6th RD, Kansas City) and top tight end Dax Raymond (Undrafted) after both decided to leave early and put their name in the NFL draft.

One possible breakout player who returns to the offense is running back Gerold Bright. Bright ran for 888 yards on just 141 carries and found the endzone on 10 of those attempts. His 6.3 yards per carry were good for 32nd in the NCAA.

The good news for the Aggies is that they’ll be returning 7 out of their 11 starters on the defensive side of the football. Senior Defensive End, Tipa Galeai returns his 10.5 sacks in 2018 to a defense that limited opponents to a respectable 23.9 points per game last season.

Utah State will have to rely heavily on the playmaking ability of standout QB Jordan Love as well as their experienced defense if they want complete back to back 10+ win seasons.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons

After hoping to build on an impressive 2017 campaign which saw them go 8-5, the Deacs took a slight step back in 2018, going 7-6.

The Deacs had a respectable offense in terms of points per game last season (31.4) despite a less than stellar passing attack (235 YPG). Their passing attacking doesn’t appear to be in a position to improve upon their 2018 numbers either.

Greg Dortch, one of their lone playmakers in the passing game, graduated last season, taking his 89 catches, 1,078 yards, and 8 touchdowns away from a team that is still struggling to find a true starting quarterback. Dortch also added 2 special teams touchdown to boot.

Wake’s passing attack certainly has its question marks, and their ground game appears due for a drop off as well. While, Wake returns Cade Carney, their leading rusher who eclipsed 1,000 yards last season while adding 8 scores, they did lose Matt Colburn, who added 759 yards and 5 TD’s on 159 carries.

Carney is still listed as questionable for this one, which could cause a major shift in the line if he is in fact ruled inactive. The Deac’s may struggle to keep the lanes open for whoever their starting running back may be come Friday night, as 3 of their starting interior linemen from last season have graduated.

Now to perhaps the most frightening unit on this Wake Forest team; the defense. Wake surrendered an ungodly 34.4 points per game, finishing the season as the 102nd ranked defense in the NCAA.

It has to be unsettling for Wake fans to realize that such a terrible defense from last season could end up being even worse this season. They graduated 2 starting interior linemen and lost starting linebacker DJ Taylor to a knee injury.

Though both offenses will have their fair share of growing pains in this one, the Aggies defense is much stronger than the Demon Deacons’. That’s enough for me to take the Aggies with the points.

Utah State should be able to get enough from Jordan Love and breakout candidate Gerold Bright to score at least 30+ in this one. I think the Deacs find themselves down early, possibly abandoning the run before they should in an effort to keep up with Love’s Aggie offense.

Wake may be shuffling Quarterbacks in this one, and I don’t trust any of their guys behind center to lead the offense to victory in this one. We’ll take the road dog with 3 and the hook.
