Nevada tries to push their record to 3-0 to start the young season while handing their opponent Utah State it’s third straight defeat. Oddsmakers expect the Wolf Pack to do just that, as -16.5 favorites Thursday night.
The Aggies haven’t put up much of a fight in either of their defeats to start the season, falling by at least 29 points in both games. Nevada meanwhile has put up 37 points exactly in both of their wins to start 2020.
Utah State Aggies
Utah State needs to find some offense on Thursday night as they are averaging just 10.0 ppg in losses at Boise State (42-13) and against San Diego State (38-7).
The Aggies managed just 92 years passing in the season opening loss to Boise, and didn’t fare much better with just 112 yards through the air last week. USU is averaging more rush yards (107) than pass yards (102) per game.
Gary Andersen’s team is in the unenviable spot of having an offense that struggles to score to go with a defense that cannot stop anybody. The Aggies are giving up 40.0 ppg through their 0-2 start.
Nevada has one of the top passing attacks in the country, but it’s been opposing rushers that are shredding Utah State. Boise State ran the ball 35 times for 171 yards and San Diego State followed that up 407 yards on 53 attempts.
Nevada Wolf Pack
The Wolf Pack are averaging 385 pass yards/game in their 2-0 start, which is the 2nd highest number in the country. QB Carson Strong has been electric, tossing for 420 and 4 TD vs. Wyoming and 350 yards and 2 TD a week ago.
Strong is showing a great command of the Wolf Pack offense in his second year as a starter. Strong has completed 75% or higher of his passes in both games and has 6 TD to 0 INT on the season.
Not that Utah State poses much of a threat on offense, but the Wolfpack defense does have a few things to sort out Thursday night. Both Wyoming and UNLV have tallied 120+ yards on the ground against Nevada this season.
The Wolf Pack have also allowed 220+ yards passing in both of their wins. That would all tend to give a lean towards the ‘over’ 56 on Thursday night, but the Aggies offense being horrid puts that number in jeopardy.
