The USC Trojans will travel to Salt Lake City and take on the Utah Utes from Rice-Eccles Stadium this Saturday night on ESPN2. The Utes will open as huge 21-point favorites at home, with the total opening at 49.5.
HISTORY:
The Utah and San Diego State matchup was a staple in both the Mountain West and WAC for 30 years, providing competitive football nearly every time out. The Utes lead the all-time series after winning the last five conference matchups, but the Aztecs did break that streak last season with a 33-31 win in San Diego.
USC Trojans
It only took four weeks, but it really looks like the USC Trojans are back and look like the team to beat out West. Southern Cal thumped Rice in the opener by 42, then picked up victories over in-state foes Stanford and Fresno State. The Trojans escaped Corvallis with a three-point win over Oregon State, then returned to the Coliseum for a lighter conference matchup.
In Week 6, USC defeated Washington State, 30-14, dropping to 3-3 against the spread this season.
USC scores 40.2 points per game, while allowing 18.6 ppg.
Caleb Williams came over with Coach Riley, and he has not disappointed. The former OU QB was rattled last weekend against the Beavers, but came through with a big time game-winning drive versus Oregon State. He looks like the best to grace the position at USC in a while.
Williams has thrown for 1,590 passing yards with 14 touchdowns to one interception through his six starts.
After Williams led the team in rushing against Rice, Travis Dye has taken the lead role by storm. The Oregon transfer has rushed for 100 yards in three of the last four games, and he torched Wassu in his matchup with them last season. Dye leads the Trojans with 571 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
Tahj Washington and Jordan Addison are going to give USC one of their best wideout tandems in recent memory. Washington has recorded back-to-back 600-yard seasons, while Addison came over from Pittsburgh after having one of the most prolific seasons in college football history (93/1479/17).
Addison picked right up where he left off, scoring twice against Rice, then following it up with a seven-catch, 172-yard, two-score performance in the win over Stanford. OU transfer Mario Williams’ rapport with Caleb Williams was on display as well, as he added four catches and 74 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown as well.
Utah Utes
Utah responded to a Week 1 loss in the Swamp to Florida with four straight wins. The Utes defeated rivals San Diego State and Southern Utah, then began Pac-12 play by taking down Arizona State and Oregon State. There second trip to Rose Bowl didn’t go so well this time though.
In Week 6, Utah lost to UCLA in Pasadena, 42-32, failing to cover for the first time since Week 1.
Utah scores 40.3 points per game, while allowing 19.1 ppg.
Cam Rising has looked great this season. The junior quarterback has thrown for three scores or more three times this season, and after failing to toss a touchdown for the first time last week, look for a bounce back effort in a return home.
Rising has thrown for 1,440 passing yards with thirteen touchdowns to three interceptions, and he’s added 249 yards on the ground through the first half of the season.
Tavion Thomas returned after a 20-touchdown season in 2021, and he’s been steady again in the Utah backfield. The junior running back had his highest total since Week 1 versus UCLA, and he leads the Utes with 386 rushing yards and five scores. Micah Bernard has added 334 total yards (180 rush, 154 rec) and 15 catches.
The absence of Brant Kuithe has burdened the passing game. The fifth-year senior led the Utes in receiving last season, and he’s one of the best tight ends in the country. With Kuithe out for the season, Dalton Kincaid has received a bump at the position. Kincaid is second on the team in receptions (23) and receiving yards (324), and he’s got a team-leading five touchdown grabs.
DeVaughn Vele has also seen a few more targets over the past three weeks. The sophomore wideout has caught six passes or more in each game during this span, and he matched last seasons total with a solid showing versus UCLA. Vele leads Utah with 27 catches for 356 yards.

It’s a shame USC is set to leave the PAC-12 because this was starting to become a marquee matchup within the conference.
Utah has a chance to spoil the Trojans season at home, but the visitors come into this game better than ever. Southern Cal might have the best trio in the nation when it comes to QB-RB-WR. Dye and Addison have been two of the most explosive players in the country, while Williams has a chance to be a Heisman finalist.
This feels similar to the Gonzaga/Baylor 2021 National championship. The Bears overpowered the Bulldogs off of sheer pedigree, and SC has a chance to do the same thing this weekend. The Trojans have struggled in Salt Lake City but that won’t be the case here.
