The USC Trojans will travel to Palo Alto to open Pac-12 play and face one of their oldest rivals, the Stanford Cardinal, this Saturday night on ABC. USC comes into this one as the eight point favorites on the road, with the total opening at 67.5.
Stanford and USC have met in nearly every season since 1919, and this will mark the 100th time these two California programs will collide. USC holds a 62-34-3 lead, but Stanford has been very competitive over the past 17 seasons, holding an 11-6 series record during this span.
USC Trojans
The Lincoln Riley era kicked off with a bang as the Trojans dominated the Rice Owls at the Coliseum. The game was tied at 7 after one, but USC took off from there, picking up the 66-14 win, while covering the massive 32-point margin along the way.
Caleb Williams came over with Coach Riley, and he did not disappoint in his debut. The former OU QB completed 86% of his passes and threw for 249 passing yards, with two touchdowns. Williams has all of the ability to restore the program, and with the CFB set to expand, this may just be the start for Williams.
Williams also paced the teaam 68 rushing yards, but three different SC running back were able to find the endzone against the Owls. Oregon transfer Travis Dye is set to have a featured role this season after receiving eight early touches in the opener, gaining 41 yards and catching three passes.
Former Stanford back Austin Jones will look to continue the momentum against his former team after capitalizing on his five touches in the opener, totaling 69 yards, while scoring twice on the ground.
Tahj Washington and Jordan Addison are going to give USC one of their best wideout tandems in recent memory. Washington has recorded back-to-back 600-yard season, while Addison came over from Pittsburgh after having one of the most prolific seasons in college football history (93/1479/17).
Addison picked right up where he left off, catching five passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns in the opener against Rice. Washington paced the team with 65 receiving yards.
Stanford Cardinal
Stanford opened their season tackling the Patriot League’s Colgate Raiders at home. The Cardinal jumped out to a big lead behind a strong effort on both sides of the ball, then cruised to a 41-10 victory.
Tanner McKee returned after a strong first year behind center, and put on a beautiful display against Colgate. The junior quarterback went completed 82% of his passes, throwing for 308 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns. He played well against Southern Cal and led the Cardinal to a 42-28 victory at the Coliseum last season.
E.J. Smith flashed a glimpse of both his father and his own potential in the opener against Colgate, going for 118 rushing yards and two scores, including a beautiful 87-yard touchdown run. Look for more of that from him this season. Smith also added five catches for 37 yards.
Jordan Humphreys and Michael Wilson looked good in the opener as well. Humphreys led the team with 88 receiving yards on four catches, while Wilson caught five balls for 82 yards and two touchdowns.
