Trojans vs. Scarlet Knights Gameday
USC makes its first road trip of the season Saturday when the No. 12 Trojans head across the country to face Rutgers at SHI Stadium in Piscataway. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET on CBS, with both teams opening Big Ten play.
The Trojans are 3-0 after sweeping a three-game homestand against San Jose State, Fresno State and Louisiana. USC closed nonconference play with a 49-30 win over Louisiana and has scored at least 39 points in every game.
USC finally leaves Los Angeles after spending three weeks making offense look considerably easier than Rutgers has.
Rutgers has considerably different problems at 0-2. The Scarlet Knights opened with a stunning 37-21 home loss to UMass, then fell behind Boston College 17-0 before fighting back and eventually losing 28-21.
So much for easing into Big Ten play.
This is only the second meeting between the programs and USC’s first trip to Piscataway.
The Trojans won 42-20 in Los Angeles in 2024, although Rutgers produced 434 yards and ran 89 plays in that game.

It’s Week 3, USC Trojans vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights, with one team protecting an unbeaten record and the other desperately trying to keep September from getting any uglier.
USC Trojans vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights Odds & Last 5
USC is laying roughly 23.5 to 24.5 points depending on the sportsbook, with Rutgers getting more than three touchdowns at home. The total is sitting at 59.5.
The Trojans have scored 42, 39 and 49 points during their 3-0 start. They covered comfortably against Fresno State but have already allowed 26 points to San Jose State and 30 to Louisiana, so the defense hasn’t spent every Saturday wearing a cape.
Rutgers has lost both games outright and against the spread.
The Scarlet Knights were 29.5-point favorites against UMass and lost by 16, then went to Boston College as short underdogs and lost by seven. Starting 0-2 is bad enough; lighting favorite money on fire against UMass was an especially creative touch.
USC won the only previous meeting by 22 points. Now the Trojans are making their first cross-country trip of the season with Oregon waiting back in Los Angeles next week.
Scarlet Knights Stats
Rutgers has scored 42 points while allowing 65 through two games. The Scarlet Knights have produced 549 passing yards, but the bigger number is seven interceptions between Dylan Lonergan and AJ Surace.
That’s an impressive amount of generosity for two Saturdays.
Rutgers has moved the football, but seven interceptions have turned promising possessions into donations.
Surace made his first collegiate start against Boston College and completed 18 of 27 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw four interceptions, including mistakes that repeatedly prevented Rutgers from completing its comeback.
KJ Duff has been the bright spot. He has 17 catches for 333 yards and five touchdowns, including eight receptions for 137 yards and two scores at Boston College.
Antwan Raymond gives Rutgers another legitimate weapon after rushing for 134 yards on 27 carries last week. He has 176 rushing yards through two games.
The Scarlet Knights don’t lack playmakers. Keeping the football long enough to use them has been the larger issue.
Trojans Stats
USC’s offense has been humming through three games, producing 1,540 total yards and 130 points. The Trojans have thrown for 1,022 yards while adding 518 on the ground, averaging better than seven yards per offensive play.
Jayden Maiava has been the engine. The senior quarterback has completed 67 of 83 passes for 896 yards, 10 touchdowns and only one interception. He threw a career-high five touchdown passes against Louisiana while completing 19 of 29 attempts for 261 yards.
King Miller leads USC with 236 rushing yards after running for 128 against Louisiana. Freshman tight end Mark Bowman also announced himself last week with six receptions for 83 yards and two touchdowns.
USC has scored at least 39 points every Saturday.
The defense has been more difficult to pin down. After shutting out Fresno State, the Trojans surrendered 30 points and 358 total yards to Louisiana, including 20 second-half points.
Lincoln Riley probably won’t send that film to the Hall of Fame.

Trojans vs. Scarlet Knights QB Matchup
There isn’t much mystery on USC’s side. Jayden Maiava is completing better than 80 percent of his passes with 10 touchdowns against one interception, and his 896 passing yards are a major reason the Trojans have opened 3-0.
Rutgers has considerably more paperwork on its quarterback desk.
Maiava arrives rolling, while Rutgers is still figuring out which quarterback gets the next chance to stop the bleeding.
Dylan Lonergan won the starting job in camp and threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns against UMass, but he also tossed three interceptions before leaving with an injury. Greg Schiano then started AJ Surace at Boston College while Lonergan remained unavailable.
Surace threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns in his first start, but four interceptions turned a decent statistical afternoon into something considerably less frame-worthy.
Lonergan remains week-to-week, and Rutgers has not established a definitive starter for USC. Calling either quarterback a lock before that changes would be guessing.
USC has no such problem.
Maiava has thrown 10 touchdowns in three games, while Rutgers quarterbacks have combined for seven interceptions in two. Sometimes the matchup sheet doesn’t bother being subtle.
USC Trojans vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights bottom line: USC has enough offense to threaten 60 by itself, but Rutgers’ turnover habit and unsettled quarterback room make the real question whether the Scarlet Knights can contribute enough scoring to help the sportsbooks get there.

Here is my Trojans Scarlet Knights free pick: Under 59.5 is my play in Piscataway. USC has scored 130 points in three games, but Rutgers has enough offensive dysfunction to make this total a little more interesting than the Trojans’ box scores suggest.
AJ Surace threw three touchdowns at Boston College, which sounds encouraging until the four interceptions arrive in the next sentence. Rutgers has already turned it over seven times through two games, and empty possessions are useful friends when you’re betting an Under.
USC can score quickly; Rutgers has been equally efficient at giving possessions away.
The Trojans don’t need to become conservative for this to work. They need to control a game they’re favored by more than three touchdowns, avoid handing Rutgers cheap points and eventually let the clock become everybody’s favorite player.
Rutgers has KJ Duff and Antwan Raymond, so I’m not expecting complete offensive silence. Still, asking the Scarlet Knights to help push this game past 59.5 against the best opponent they’ve seen is asking plenty.
My CFB betting approach here is to fade the scoreboard fireworks USC produced against a forgiving nonconference schedule. A comfortable Trojans win doesn’t automatically require 60 points.
Under 59.5 is my play.
