Notre Dame is coming off a bad loss but with motivation to turn things around immediately. That’s going to be a problem for a UNLV Rebels squad already on the deeply inferior side of this Week 8 showdown.
This one has blowout potential written all over it, and the odds speak to that with Notre Dame opening and sticking so far as 24.5-point favorites.
UNLV Rebels
UNLV hasn’t had a bad season on the surface. Its winning record is only as close to .500 as it is because of two rough outings in the last two games. They started the season 4-1 averaging 43.8 points in their wins, and their only loss a 20-14 L to the California Golden Bears—a game in which they entered 11.5-point dogs.
The problem is that those last two losses really swept away any momentum the Rebels might’ve expected to carry with them into Notre Dame Stadium all the way out in South Bend.
In their last game, UNLV fell to Air Force, 42-7. The game before that was a 40-7 trouncing at the hands of the San Jose Spartans.
At the risk of sounding ominous, we’ll just say there may be a Rule of Three in progress here. Saturday could look quite similar.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Notre Dame entered their last game against Stanford a 16.5-point favorite with a -800 Moneyline (Stanford +550). That game wasn’t even supposed to be close, let alone a close victory for the Cardinal.
The Fighting Irish played well before the giant fumble that was that contest, and they should be able to get back to that point in Week 8.
Early offense will be how it’s done. Last week against Stanford, the offense couldn’t get going, which allowed the Cardinal to hang around and strike only as needed.
This week, the Fighting Irish should be able to put their metaphorical cleats on the metaphorical throats of UNLV while putting very real, very quick points on the board. The Rebels will be forced into home-run plays and a lot of quick 3-and-outs if this is the case.

That last part is important, though. The Fighting Irish have lost, almost unbelievably, two of their first three home games this year. They are not going to keep that trend going. The Notre Dame coaching staff and fanbase won’t let this one turn into a disaster.
