The UMass Minutemen will travel to S.B. Ballard Stadium in Norfolk to take on the Monarchs of Old Dominion this Saturday.
The Minutemen have had ups and downs so far in a schedule that includes some very tough opponents early. They are 1-4 and hope to get their second win against a stout team in Old Dominion.
The Monarchs are sporting a much better 3-2 record, but have not had the stiff competition that UMass has dealt with.

Old Dominion looks like they are the superior team in this one, and the home field can only help their chances.
They have won both of their home games so far, and this is only the second road test for UMass.
If the Monarchs can keep the Minutemen at bay, it will put them only two victories away from bowl eligibility halfway through the season.
UMass Minutemen
The Minutemen have had a tough road already even before they reach Norfolk this Saturday.
They started off promisingly as they gave the Gators an early scare in the Swamp. Florida did manage to pull away in the fourth quarter and win 24-7, but there were good signs for UMass.
Things then got worse the following week as they were beaten handily at home by rival Boston College by a very similar score of 26-7.
They got their first win in a defensive battle with Florida International the next week then gave Mississippi State all they could handle in an offensive shootout.

The early season held lots of promising signs for the Minutemen, but they have just been unable to get over the hump.
They lost a disappointing one at home last week to Tulane 34-21 after leading 14-0 early.
UMass still has uncertainty at quarterback halfway through the year, with Andrew Ford and Ross Comis splitting time.
Ford has been the more successful of the two with 660 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions.
Old Dominion Monarchs
Old Dominion has surprised many people with their success early in the year. However, despite the 3-2 record, they have a weak schedule and lack anything resembling a marquis win.
They looked very impressive in their opener, beating Hampton 54-21 but were unable to do the same when competition got stiffer.
They lost consecutive games to Appalachian State (31-7) and North Carolina State (49-22), but come into this one on a two game winning streak.

The unquestioned leader of the Monarchs is their 6’3″ senior quarterback, David Washington. Washington has thrown for 1,002 yards with 11 touchdowns and only two interceptions so far.
With him at the helm, Old Dominion has scored 33.6 points per game and gained 407.4 yards per game.
With leading rusher, Ray Lawry, possibly sidelined with a sprained ankle, Washington will be expected to carry even more of the load.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- Old Dominion is 4-0-1 ATS in their last five home games
- UMass is 2-7 in their last nine against a team with a winning record
- The UMass offense is only scoring 18.8 PPG this year
Free Week 6 NCAA Football Prediction
These two teams are more evenly matched than their records might indicate.
However Monarchs quarterback David Washington should be the difference maker, especially when compared to the uncertainty at QB on the other side.
If UMass can decide on their quarterback and stick with him through the entire game, it should help their chances.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Old Dominion -7
UMass has had a tougher schedule so far and been impressive against SEC opponents Florida and Mississippi State, but their inconsistency is a worry. The questions on defense and quarterback make it hard to pick them in a tough one on the road.
