The Sun Belt championship game will see the UL Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers.
These two teams met back in October. App State went on the road and beat the Ragin’ Cajuns 17-7.
UL Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns
The Ragin’ Cajuns had a very nice season, finishing with a Sun Belt East Division. They barely beat UL Monroe in their regular season finale, winning 31-30.
This was clearly a look ahead spot for the Ragin’ Cajuns and they were lucky to get out with a win. They had a total of 522 yards in the game an once again, it started with their rushing attack.
Running the ball has been the UL Lafayette strength all season long. They are averaging 274.2 yards per game, ranking 6th in the country.
They are averaging 500.3 total yards per game, ranking 8th in the country. Passing the ball has been an issue for the Ragin’ Cajuns, so they are somewhat one-dimensional. They did have 270 yards passing last week, which is about 50 yards higher than their season average. The problem is they are playing a much better defense this week, so they should not rely on the passing game.

The defense for the Ragin’ Cajuns have a pretty solid defense this year. Despite giving up 570 yards in the game to UL Monroe, they generally shut down their opponents very effectively.
Particularly against the pass, the Ragin’ Cajuns allow an average of 197.6 yards passing per game, which ranks 23rd in the country. They just allowed the Warhawks to throw for 330 yards, so UL Lafayette will certainly need to ramp up the pressure to take down the Mountaineers.
Appalachian State Mountaineers
The Mountaineers have had another fantastic season and if not for a slip up against Georgia Southern, they very well could be looking at a perfect 13-0 season with a win in the Sun Belt title game. They just crushed Troy 48-13, and gave the Trojans absolutely no chance to stay competitive in the game.
From start to finish, App State did whatever they wanted to this Troy team. They had a total of 522 yards, which could have easily been close to 600 if they went all out in the second half. The score was 34-13 at the half in this game, so they were able to coast to the end.
Running the ball has been the strength for this offense this season. They are averaging 226 rushing yards per game, which ranks as the 18th best rushing offense in the country. They also are lighting up the scoreboard nearly every game, averaging 38.9 points per game.
Passing the ball has been somewhat of a struggle as they average just 211.1 yards per game. However, they just threw for 328 yards against Troy, so perhaps they will be able to have some success against UL Lafayette.

The defense for this Mountaineers is just as good as their offense. They are allowing 18.8 points per game and showed just how tough they could be when they shut out the Trojans in the second half of last weeks game.
This defense holds their opponent to under 200 yards both passing and rushing on average, so they should be able to stop anything the Ragin’ Cajuns throw at them.
