The No. 24 Oregon Ducks are set to host UC Davis in an afternoon game to kick off the 2016 college football season.
The Ducks are no longer a national powerhouse the way they were under Chip Kelly (and early in Mark Helfrich’s tenure), but they’re still a second-tier program looking to prove doubters wrong by overachieving this season.
UC Davis, on the other hand, is simply looking to become relevant after a year that saw them struggle in too many categories to keep them out of the basement.
UC Davis Aggies
UC Davis enters the 2016 season after ranking dead last in the Big Sky in terms of yards per game (358.7 yards). To make matters worst, it ranked dead last in terms of sacks as well with 14.
As cliche as it sounds, this game is about getting reps and playing respective football for the Aggies. Nobody expects them to win, and quite frankly, very few expect them to keep it close.
UC Davis is projected to finish last in the Big Sky according to the coaches preseason poll and 12th (ahead of only Sacramento State) in the media poll. On top of that, this group doesn’t have a single player picked to the preseason all0conference team.
UC Davis went 2-9 last season, going just 2-6 in conference play.
In this one, the key is to strike early.
If there’s going to be any sort of football beyond the first half that resembles a competitive game, the Aggies must be within striking distance, not letting the Ducks control the tempo early.
Oregon is the No. 24 team in the country, but it has plenty of questions that will determine if this is overrating or underrating them. For starters: quarterback.
Oregon has named an FCS graduate transfer its starter for the second year in a row. Dakota Prukop is a fairly unknown asset for this program, so having a cupcake of a first contest is important when it comes to establishing a rhythm.
The key for the entire Ducks team in this one is to simply control the football. The only way UC Davis has anything resembling a chance is if Oregon gets sloppy and gives the Aggies extra possessions by coughing up the ball.
The other area this team needs to be disciplined is in the penalty game. If UC Davis has anything going for it, it’s the fact that it was third in the FCS last year in terms of penalty yards lost.
The Ducks were just 92nd in the FBS when it came to penalty yards lost and 99th in total penalties.
Turning the ball over and committing penalties won’t be enough to give the Aggies the game, but it will absolutely make this one closer than it should be.

Free Week 1 NCAA Football Prediction
Although there is concern that Oregon could come out in this one a bit sloppy considering it has a new quarterback and will likely be overconfident, don’t expect it to sway the outcome of this contest too drastically.
