At 4–1 and 2–0 overall in Conference USA, the University of Alabama-Birmingham travels to Rice to play the Owls, who are winless in conference.
The Blazers are two-score favorites in Houston.
UAB’s 28–7 Week 6 win over Louisiana Tech was all about the defense. The Blazers forced the Bulldogs’ first eleven pass attempts incomplete and held the opposing quarterback to just eighty-four yards through the air.
They never allowed the ground game to get going, either. La Tech managed just forty yards on the ground in the day-long struggle.
The Blazers aren’t huge up front but they have a terrific secondary, led by corners Kris Moll and Dy’Jonn Turner. The two connected on a big turnover midway through the third quarter when Moll stripped a ballcarrier and Turner scooped it up, running it into LA Tech territory to set up the offense for the go-ahead score.
That great coverage has helped UAB to sack the quarterback five times in its last three games. It ranks second nationally with four sacks per game.
The Blazers will get back home after this game but ought not to sleep ahead of this game. Beating LA Tech on the road was a huge lift to get into first place in the conference but this is a potentially sleepy spot against an underwhelming Rice team.
Rice hasn’t won since narrowly beating Prairie View by a field goal in Week 1 of the season. The Owls just managed three points in its most recent 20–3 loss to UTSA.
Turnovers killed the Owls. They committed three of them, which UTSA turned into seventeen points. Otherwise, the Owls’ defense was strong all day. The Roadrunners’ 178 yards were the fewest Rice has allowed in a game since 2013.
Unfortunately, Rice’s offensive star was punter Jack Fox, who averaged nearly forty-six yards on his six punts. Four of them were downed inside the twenty, three of which finished inside the ten. He also completed the first pass of his collegiate career to convert a fake on fourth down.
It will be NASA Day on the Rice Campus Saturday. Space geeks will gather for a special tailgate before the game with flight simulators and all the works and stay after the game for a free showing of Apollo 13.

Free Week 7 NCAA Football Pick: sleepy spot for UAB.
Rice looked good defensively last week and it doesn’t have too many home games remaining. I’m not calling for the upset here but sixteen points is more than enough for me.
