The Tulsa Golden Hurricane will travel to Philadelphia and take on the Temple Owls from Lincoln Financial Field this Friday on ESPN2. Tulsa comes into this one as the 13-point road favorites, with the total opening at 52.5.
HISTORY: Tulsa and Temple have crossed paths six times over the last 40 years, and they’ve split each of the matchups. Tulsa won last year’s matchup, 44-10.
Tulsa Golden Hurricane
Tulsa has fallen victim to the strength of schedule this season. A season-opening trip to Wyoming did not bode well for them, but they bounced back with a shootout victory over Northern Illinois. After defeating Jacksonville State, Tulsa traveled to Oxford and played Ole Miss very well, nearly defeating them. The Golden Hurricane got Cinci in their AAC opener, and also played them very close. Last time out felt like a smack to the face literally, as they regressed a bit on the road.
In Week 6, Tulsa loss to Navy, 53-21, dropping to 3-3 against the spread this season.
Tulsa is scoring 33.1 points per game, while allowing 35.2 ppg.
Davis Brin needs to capitalize and get Tulsa back in the win column here. After an explosive start, he’s had a bit of tough time over the past three weeks. Now Ole Miss, Cinci, and Navy all represent strong, rugged defenses, so this Temple matchup should give him the opportunity to get back on track.
Brin has thrown for 1,839 passing yards, with 14 touchdowns to five interceptions through the first six games.
Steven Anderson has given Tulsa steady production in the lead role. The senior back is a 242-pound bruiser, who gained a season-high 76 yards in the hard fought game with Ole Miss. Anderson scored four touchdowns in the first three games, and he leads Tulsa with 236 rushing yards.
Keylon Stokes been one of the most dynamic players in the country. The shifty senior wideout is a very big part of the offense, and very explosive. Stokes caught eight or more passes and gained 135 yards or higher in each of the first three games, and he burned Navy for 152 yards last time out.
Stokes leads Tulsa in catches (44) and receiving yards (765), and they’ve also got solid production from Juancarlos Santana (29/480/4) and Malachi Jones (23/323/1).
Temple Owls
Temple has picked up a pair of wins but they’ve struggled versus FBS competition thus far. The Owls were shutout by Duke in Week 1, but responded by defeating Lafayette in their home opener. They hosted former Big East rival Rutgers, but ended up losing by two points. Temple shut out UMass in Week 4, but they were overwhelmed in their AAC opener last time out.
In Week 5, Temple was routed by UCF, 70-13, dropping to 3-3 ATS this season.
Temple is scoring 14.7 points per game, while allowing just 25.7 ppg.
E.J. Warner took over after Week 1, and his genes simply may have made Temple more competent instantly. E.J., the son of legendary Rams QB Kurt Warner, game-managed each of his first three starts well. The freshman quarterback threw a pair of touchdown passes in wins over Lafayette & UMass, but he’s been rattled by AAC action.
Warner has thrown for 1,040 passing yards with six touchdowns to six interceptions through his first five games.
Darvon Hubbard and Edward Saydee haven’t had much room to run, but they’ve split the load early. Saydee has rushed for a team-lead 160 rushing yards in six games, while Hubbard has added 124 yards. NDSU transfer and backup QB Quincy Patterson has also contributed to ground game in designed packages, scoring a team-lead two rushing touchdowns.
Adonicas Sanders has been Warner’s go-to guy early. The Georgia Tech transfer caught eight balls versus Rutgers, and four passes for 101 yards and a score in the win over UMass. Sanders has 28 receptions for 350 receiving yards, while senior wideout Jose Barbon has come alive and recorded 100 yards in each of his last two outings.

They’ve struggled to keep up on both sides of the ball in both AAC matchups, and they might find themselves overwhelmed against a hungry Golden Hurricane team, whose better than their record suggests. Tulsa’s near wins over Ole Miss and Cinci shouldn’t be overlooked despite last week’s results, look for them to bounce back versus a lackluster Temple team on the road here.
