The Tulsa Golden Hurricane and East Carolina Pirates are simply closing out the season with no post-season game in sight as they meet on the final day of the regular season this Saturday in Greenville.
After two winning campaigns in 2015 & 16, Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery is now facing a third straight losing season in his 5th year with the Hurricane program. Might there be some more chatter of a replacement for Montgomery? We saw plenty of those types of conversations entering 2019 regarding the coach’s future, so there is potential for this to be his last game on the Tulsa sidelines.
ECU brought in head coach Mike Houston to stop the bleeding from 4 straight losing campaigns for the Pirates. Well, job 1 not done yet because 4 wins aren’t going to be seen as all that successful after the last 3 consecutive seasons produced no more than 3 wins.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane
With no real news coming out of the hierarchy in Tulsa, we can only assume that the coals are on the fire regarding the dismissal of Phil Montgomery. Usually, when it is quiet and we hear nothing about support from the University, we can expect a change to come.
So, coaching as it could potentially be his final game, Montgomery needs to fire up his kids to show they want to fight for him. Not that they haven’t had that chance all season, but this weekend will always be the one where futures are torn apart as pink slips roll down the wire.
There is not much to take in previewing this game, other than the fact that Tulsa is amazingly favored by 6 points on the road. This team is 1 – 4 away from home and 0 – 3 from their last 3 games played in Greenville dating back to 2010.
Both of these teams have played to the under more often than not, as each has a 4 – 7 O/U mark through 11 games.
Tulsa likes to throw the rock around the field and that’s because they have no idea how to run the ball in the least. This Hurricane team ranks 120th in rushing putting up 120.2 ypg and yet sit 31st in the nation totaling 276.8 passing yards a contest.
Ironically, this team stops the pass pretty well being ranked 31st in the land allowing only 200 passing yards a game.
Junior QB Zach Smith is set to topple the 3,000-yard passing plateau should he gain a mere 52 yards during this final game of the season. Smith has been sacked 38 times this season which means this team has to work on their O-line in a big way over the off-season.

ECU Pirates
Mike Houston knew the task was not an easy one at hand when he took over in Greenville, and it really just became more of the same as this season unfolded. ECU with 4 wins may be one more victory than they have seen here in 3 years, but that is still not enough to say there is a marked improvement.
Houston brought all of his James Madison staff for the most part to ECU and it has taken some time to get the message across. After all the success at JMU, Houston was asked to take his show to the next level and help lift ECU out of the dungeon to be taken seriously again. That has not happened yet, although we have seen some good things.
Sophomore QB Holton Ahlers has surpassed the 3,000-yard passing mark with a game to play, and his 18 to 10 TD / INT ratio is respectable enough. At 6-3 and weighing in about 240 lbs, Ahlers has no issue tucking the ball in and using his legs as an asset to his all-around game.
Ahlers has gained 324 rush yards to sit 2nd on the team behind Demetrius Mauney, although let’s be honest here. Mauney has carried the ball 119 times to Ahlers 102 attempts, and Mauney has only brought in 428 rush yards himself.
Trace Christian and Darius Pinnix Jr. have each done an admirable job getting some carries and yards, but overall this offense needs a boost from the ground game to find a better balance.
Defensively? Well, when you sit in the rankings over 100th in every category and there are 130 teams? No bueno!

I am suggesting you touch this over 61 and then click on yes, yes they will go over that number when this one ends 34 – 31 with a last-second kick to cash us out.
We will still be happy when they tie it at 31 obviously to hit those 62 points we need, but maybe we could see over time and watch this score get even higher. Hopefully, one of them just ends it in regulation so these two can just get this year over with, for their and our sake!
Over 61 is the call on the total in this barn-burner, can’t-miss AAC tilt on Saturday in Greenville.
