Tulane comes into this game as major underdogs against a very good Midshipmen squad.
Tulane comes in after an easy win over Grambling, and Navy took care of Florida Atlantic in Lane Kiffin’s debut.
Tulane Green Wave
Grambling was never viewed as a formidable opponent, but it was still a good performance by the offense. Senior QB Jonathan Banks had a good game throwing the ball.
He finished the game 10-15 for 185 yards and three touchdowns, while also running for 84 and a score. He will be the focal point of the Navy defense and I expect him to struggle in this one.
Darius Bradwell also chipped in with 6 carries for 58 yards and a score. The smart strategy for the Green Wave will be to play the ball control game and keep the Navy offense off the field as much as possible.
Bradwell should get more carries in this game and I expect 70 yards and a score on the ground.
I won’t put much stock into the Tulane defensive performance against a lower subdivision team, but facing the Navy option attack is always tricky.
If the Green Wave can force a few turnovers then it should keep the game close.
The biggest concern will be the Tulane defensive line, which gave up two rushing touchdowns to Grambling.
Zach Abey stepped into the starting QB role and put up excellent numbers on the ground. He ran for an amazing 235 yards and scored two touchdowns.
His longest run of 40 yards made the FAU defense look two steps slower.
His only issue during the game was throwing the football, as he was just 3-10 with one touchdown and 1 interception. He should be able to take a bulk of the carries again in this game, and should get at least 150 on the ground.
Fullback Joshua Walker also had a major impact on the option offense, as he ran the ball 8 times for 75 yards and chipped in two scores.
Expect him to get carries in the red zone, and equal his two touchdown output of last week.
The Midshipmen defense gave up over 275 yards through the air to FAU QB Daniel Parr, but that was a result of being in a huge hole and abandoning the run.
The secondary should play much better this week and may force a few turnovers.
