Tulane has been pretty good thus far. They beat up on their last opponent Southern Mississippi and had an impressive lead on Navy until they blew the 24-0 lead in the second half to lose 27-24. The Green Wave was also able to rally in the fourth quarter to beat Southern Alabama.
Houston has had a disappointing season and it is not their fault. They have yet to play a football game due to each of their four opponents canceling the game because of COVID-19.
Houston will be motivated in their first game of the season, but is it enough to take on the Green Wave who has live game experience?
Tulane Green Wave
Tulane went down 14-0 early in their matchup with Southern Mississippi until Head Coach Willie Fritz made the change from starting quarterback Keon Howard to Michael Pratt. The Green Wave ended up winning that game 66-24.
Pratt only went 9-19 for 142 yards and two touchdowns. The impressive rushing attack the Green Wave possesses led the comeback. They rank 4th in the country in rushing yards per game with 298.3, which results from their 6.5 yards per carry.
They lose their leading rusher, Tyjae Spears, for the year due to an ACL injury, but the Green Wave might have the most depth in the country at the running back position, so they will stick to the game plan of running the ball down opponents throats.
The running attack will continue to produce scary numbers and will add to its 14 touchdowns on the season.
Houston Cougars
As we have discussed, this is Houston’s first game of the year, which means they have not played at full speed and contact live situation game yet. That is a considerable disadvantage.
Additionally, they lost the dynamic D’Eriq King to Miami in the offseason and now hand the job off to Clayton Tune. He played 11 games and was good for 1,533 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, 9 interceptions, and 59 percent completion rate for Houston last season.
He is also not afraid to gain yards with his legs and has broken off for some big runs in his short career.
Houston struggled as a team last year, going 4-8, but their defense really had troubles. They allowed opponents to 34 points per game and, on top of that, let offenses run for nearly 180 yards per game.
Houston will have a lot of motivation coming into their first game of the year and being at home, but will it be enough to take down the Green Wave?

Free Week 6 NCAA Football Pick
Last year Tulane won this game in the last three seconds on a 53-yard touchdown pass to take the game 38-31.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Tulane +6.5
This year, I expect them not to need the last three seconds. Tulane will have great success with the ground and pound game, and that will set the tone of the game from the start.
This is a really tough first game to win for a Houston Cougars team that had a terrible year last season. I do not see much change from last year to this year unless Clayton Tune can become a star.
My pick is Tulane +6.5 and Money Line.
