The Troy Trojans travel to LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday for a matchup with a BYU team playing their first game after a COVID-19 outbreak. It’s been over two weeks since BYU’s season opener against Navy.
Troy Trojans
Troy’s 47-13 opening day blowout of Middle Tennessee was a promising start to the program’s second year under head coach Chip Lindsey. The Trojans look to return to winning ways after failing to record double-digit wins last year for the first time since 2015. Troy lost starting quarterback Kaleb Barker to graduation, but they boast a talented receiving corps returning their top 3 pass catchers from a year ago in Kaylon Gieger, Khalil McClain, and Reggie Todd.

The Trojans offense didn’t miss a beat as they rolled Middle Tennessee for 496 total yards and 47 points. Quarterback Gunnar Watson threw for 248 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in his first start. Last year’s touchdown reception leader Khalil McClain hauled in both of Watson’s touchdown passes. B.J. Smith accounted for 81 of Troy’s 240 rushing yards while average 8.1 yards per carry. He split carries with Sophomore Charles Strong, who finished with 54 yards and a touchdown.
The Trojan defense was one of the worst in the country last year. They were 119th in points allowed giving up 36.6 ppg to opposing offenses. They will need to perform much better if they want to stay have a chance against BYU. They return a handful of starters and some talented transfers to help bolster that side of the football.
BYU Cougars
BYU kicked off the year in near perfect fashion as they romped Navy in a 55-3 win. Things went the Cougars way on both sides of the ball as their 55 points was more than they scored in any game last year, and they kept the Midshipmen out of the endzone. They put up 580 yards of total offense and held Navy under 150 total yards.
The Cougars also return a multitude of starters from last years squad that finished 7-6. They return Zach Wilson who started nine games last year, as well as backup Baylor Romney. All five starting offensive lineman return as well. The Cougar offense played really well at times but lacked consistency in some big matchups a year ago.
BYU’s has enough depth on the defensive side of the ball to not expect much drop off from last year. They held opponents to 26.8 ppg and look to improve in 2020. This will be their first test through the air as Navy’s run-heavy offense only threw the ball eight times.

NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- The total has gone OVER in 8 of Troy’s last 12 games played on a Saturday.

- Over is 5-2-1 in BYU last 8 games overall.
Free Week 4 NCAA Football Prediction:
BYU should have no problem moving the ball against this Troy defense, and they should put up a lot of points in the process. While Troy’s defense played well against Middle Tennessee, the BYU offense is a different animal. The Trojans were 119th in points allowed per game a year ago, and the Cougars will be able to take advantage.
Troy won’t hang as many points on BYU as they did on Middle Tennessee, but they should be able score. They return a ton of starters from an offense that was a top 25 scoring offense a year ago. The Trojans also offense also plays at an incredibly fast pace. If BYU takes an early lead Troy may end up throwing the ball to play catch up most of the afternoon. I will take the over at 60.5 points.
