This week three matchup will see the Texas Tech Red Raiders out of the Big 12 and the Arizona Wildcats out of the PAC-12
This will be the first meeting between these two teams in 30 years.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
The Red Raiders have rolled over their first two opponents, but to be fair, they have not played anyone good. They beat Montana State 45-10 and UTEP 38-3. Not exactly powerhouses on the gridiron.
One positive sign is Texas Tech had been able to do whatever they want on the offensive side of the ball. They average 41.5 points per game, which is 29th in the country.
The Red Raiders totaled 413 yards on UTEP, but were more balanced than they have been in the past. They had 264 passing yards and 149 rushing yards.
The main problem with the rushing game was that they did not have a guy with more than 50 yards. Two guys had 45 yards each, so they will really need to establish a true number one back if they are going to have more success in this game.
The Red Raiders had several receivers make an impact against UTEP. Starting with TJ Vasher, who had 6 catches with 78 yards and two touchdowns. Right behind him was Dalton Rigdon, who also had 6 catches but he had 66 yards.
The passing offense is averaging 350 yards per game and this is their key to shredding the Arizona defense and picking up a win on the road.
Surprisingly the defense has looked impressive. They allowed 6.5 points per game. Yes, they have played two nobody teams, but in the past, they would score 60+ against a nobody and then go an allowed 30+.
The Wildcats got their first win of the season when they beat Northern Arizona. The score to this game was 65-41, so not exactly a performance to be proud about.
Offensively, they were extremely good as they totaled 720 yards.
The Wildcats ran all over Northern Arizona, picking up 431 yards on the ground. They ran the ball 46 times, which averages out to 9.4 yards per carry. They had two 100-yard rushers and four different guys to score while running the ball.
Arizona did not even need to throw the ball as much as they did, but they picked up 289 yards through the air anyways. Five different receivers caught a touchdown pass, but I expect this to drop off significantly against an improved looking defense from Texas Tech.
The defense for Arizona was absolutely torched by Northern Arizona, which is a huge concern. They allowed 442 total yards and 41 points to a cupcake team. Their run defense was stout, but when you allow 373 yards through the air it is never a good sign.
