It’s the Battle of the Bobcats! Unfortunately, that childish little coincidence might be the only compelling thing about this Week 1 matchup. The visiting Bobcats – the Texas State variety – are, well, not good.
They are relying on new head coach Everett Withers – who has experience coaching North Carolina – to change the culture and recruit in some talent.

Don’t confuse Ohio with Ohio State – they aren’t world-beaters either, as they reside in the pedestrian MAC East. Still, they are three-touchdown favorites over the abjectly miserable FBS program that plays in San Marcos, TX.
Ohio tends to overachieve under talented veteran head coach Frank Solich.
Texas State Bobcats
Woof. Where to start? The Tx. Bobcats have a non-existent running game; all three RBs from last year combined for only 1,381 yards in 2015. True freshman Tyler Tutt should be toting the rock primarily in Week 1.
Senior QB Tyler Jones was simply not that good last year, he’ll be on a short leash with Eddie Printz, a graduate transfer from Missouri, waiting in the wings.

On the other side of the ball, last year’s defensive co-ordinator John Thompson basically slunk away from campus with his tail between his legs, as Texas State allowed a ridiculous 646 yards per game and 58 points per game against Florida State, Houston and Southern Miss.
Clearly, that’s not going to cut it in the Bowl Subdivision.
The best players on a bad defense are nose tackle Dallas McClarty and sophomore LB/DB Frankie Griffin.
Ohio Bobcats
The green and white of Ohio might take the MAC East division this year, with Bowling Green really being their only stiff competition, but they still don’t have the talent or depth of a program in a major conference.
That said, sneaky good offensive players like WR Sebastian Smith and RB A.J. Ouelette should gouge Texas State for some large gains.
If the Bobcats are going to please the fans of southern Ohio, they have to ensure they stomp teams like Texas State, the Sun Belt cellar dwellers.

Linebacker Quentin Poling, DE Tarell Basham and DB Toran Davis should lead an overachieving defense in Week 1.
Seeing as no one on Texas State poses a running threat, Ohio can focus singularly on stopping the pass attack.
It shouldn’t be beyond Ohio’s capabilities to make impact plays at home in Week 1.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- Ohio is 8-3 versus current Sun Belt Conference teams, but they lost their last contest against Appalachian State in the ’15 Camellia Bowl.
- Ohio is 11-2 since 2003 in home openers at Peden Stadium.
- Texas State was 3-9 last season and have never appeared in a bowl.
Free Week 1 NCAA Football Prediction
It is clearly a rebuilding year for Texas State, which should have the home team players and fans salivating in Week 1.
The Texas State program could well be steered in the right direction under the purview of Coach Withers, but it’s not an overnight fix and there will be some profound growing pains in San Marcos, starting this Saturday in southern Ohio.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Ohio ATS
Ohio QB J.D. Sprague, RB Ouellette, WR Smith and the rest of the Athens gang will put up some stats against Texas State’s middling defense.
The experienced defenders for Ohio shouldn’t have much trouble suppressing the visitors’ one-dimensional attack.
It’s just the start of a long season for the Texas State Bobcats. Not so for their namesake in the Hocking Hills.
