The Texas Longhorns will take the 6-hour trip north to Lubbock and take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders from Jones AT&T Stadium this Saturday on ESPN. Texas will open as the six-point favorites here on the road, with the total opening at 61.
HISTORY: Texas and Texas Tech have me in the Battle for the Chancellor’s Spurs in every season since 1958, providing countless classic moments like the one shown above. The Longhorns lead the all-time series 54-17, but Texas Tech has managed to cover in five of the last seven matchups.
Texas Longhorns
Despite the final result, the entire country saw the return of a fallen program. The Longhorns nearly pulled off one of the biggest wins in school history, and one of the biggest upsets of all-time on a national stage, in Week 2.
Texas admirably lost to Alabama, 20-19, covering their generous 21-point underdog spread.
Steve Sarkisian has a decision to make at quarterback now with Quinn Ewers set to miss the next month at least. Hudson Card performed admirably against Alabama last weekend, but a bad ankle may prevent him from making the start Saturday. Redshirt freshman Charles Wright is slated to make the first start of his career if Card can’t go.
The Longhorns remain strong in the backfield with Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson returning. It’s there third year splitting touches, and both backs have eclipsed the 1,500-yard mark for their career’s, with Robinson totaling 1,127 rushing yards last season. Johnson and Robinson both scored in the opener, with freshman Jonathan Brooks scoring his first career touchdown as well. Robinson gained 111 yards from scrimmage and even brought in a touchdown catch.
2021 leading receivers Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittingham start on the outside again this season. Worthy starred against Alabama, catching five passes for 97 yards, while Whittington added seven catches for 64 yards. Sophomore Ja’Tavion Sanders was quiet against Bama, but he’s a mismatch at the tight end positon, and he caught six passes for 85 yards and a score in the opener.
Texas is going to have to lean on their ground game and defense to get the job done here.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
Texas Tech jumped out to a 2-0 start with home victories over Murray State and Houston. TTU held off a late rally from in-state foe Houston and picked up a walkoff overtime victory on a touchdown run from quarterback Donovan Smith. The Red Raiders faced a stiff non-conference battle in ACC country last Saturday, but couldn’t prevail.
Last weekend, Texas Tech lost to N.C. State in Raleigh, 27-14, dropping to 1-2 ATS this season.
Donovan Smith leads the vaunted Texas Tech Air Raid system. The sophomore quarterback has endured his share of highs and lows early, but he comes into this one with a chance to revisit history on home turf. All college football fans are familiar with the infamous Texas/TTU game of __ that featured the Graham Harrell to Michael Crabtree game-winner.
Smith is no stranger to walkoffs, and after leading the Red Raiders to a double overtime win, he’s capable of pulling another win (or cover) out of the hat. Smith’s got to cut down on the turnovers, but he’s up to 786 passing yards with seven touchdowns to five picks on the season.
Veteran backs Tahj Brooks and Sarodorick Thompson split the touches again this year for the Red Raiders. Brooks leads the team in yards (134) and touchdowns (4), while catching 12 passes through the first three weeks. Thompson led TTU in rushing last season and he gained 51 yards in the loss to N.C. State.
Texas Tech ranks 7th in the country in passing at 374 yards per game, and four wideouts have come out and contribute early. Jerand Bradley leads the team in catches (14) and receiving yards (172).

Steve Sarkisian has the Longhorns headed in the right direction, and with Quinn Ewers return on the horizon, and a date at the State Fair with Oklahoma just two weeks away, look for them to come and grind another win out. Donovan Smith is going to give them a run for their money, but the UT defense will make the one play they need to secure the victory.
