Saturday sees another collision between two Big 12 Top 25 programs when No. 20 Texas visits No. 11 Oklahoma State.
Texas is coming off of a 24-21 win over Iowa State that required a fourth-quarter rally. Oklahoma State, on the other hand, couldn’t swing a close victory and is coming off its first loss of the season, a 43-40 disappointment to then-ranked No. 13 TCU.
Texas Longhorns
Texas won its game against Iowa State but it really more outlasted the Cyclones. That was still good enough for a jump in the polls, though, as the Longhorns improved from No. 24 to No. 21, and also up from No. 21 to No. 20 in the AP poll.
As of this writing, ESPN Analytics has the Longhorns as a 65.8% favorite in Week 8. They enter the contest averaging 36.7 points per game and giving up just 18.3. Those numbers are good enough for 45th and 20th, respectively, in the nation.
Texas will enter this game with its eyes on the Week 8 prize, but there’s no denying this game starts a tough, crucial stretch for the Big 12 powerhouse. The schedule shows the Kansas State Wildcats and TCU Horned Frogs up next, and the Longhorns know that how they kick off this stretch sets the tone for the rest of the season.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
Oklahoma State really did see the opposite theme as Texas play out over the weekend, letting a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter slip against TCU, and ultimately ending up on the wrong side of a 13-10 double overtime finish.
As a result, Oklahoma State has slipped from No. 8 to No. 11 in the AP Poll. In the Coaches Poll, the Cowboys are No. 11, too, but their slip was a tad more steep down from No. 7.
Like Texas, Oklahoma State finds itself in a brutal run of three games, starting with TCU last week, Texas on Saturday and currently ranked No. 17 Kansas State in Week 9.
Entering this one, Oklahoma State is averaging 44.3 points per game and giving up 27.8. The latter is only good enough for No. 75 in the country, but their offensive prowess has landed them the No. 9 spot in scoring.
