It’s the second Saturday in October, and the State Fair is in town. College football fans know what this means, and for the first time since 1998, the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners will cross paths with both unranked. A victory here will turn the tide for the winner, while a third-loss will send the loser home in panic mode. Texas opens as the 7-point favorites for this Red River Showdown from the Cotton Bowl in Dallas this weekend.
HISTORY: This will mark the 118th meeting betweeen Texas and Oklahoma. Also known as the Red River Shootout, this is arguably the best rivalry in college football, especially when both programs are in peak formed. They’ve faced off in every season since 1900, and Texas leads the all-time series 62-50-5, despite dropping six of the last seven meetings to Oklahoma.
Texas Longhorns
Close calls have prevented this Longhorn team from being undefeated. A heartbreaking loss to Alabama in one of the most watched television events of all-time was the end result in Week 2, and an overtime loss in Lubbock have put two blemishes on their record. Their defeats have come at a combined four points, and they responded last weekend with authority.
In Week 5, Texas defeated West Virginia at home, 38-20, improving to 3-2 against this spread this season.
Texas scores 36.8 points per game, while allowing 21.4 points per game.
Steve Sarkisian could potentially have Quinn Ewers back for this high profile matchup, and that could be a big swing in the Longhorns favor. If Ewers is unable to go, Hudson Card will get call again and he’s performed admirably in relief. The sophomore QB is coming off of his best performance, passing for 303 yards and three scores against West Virginia.
Card has thrown for 923 passing yards with six touchdowns to one interception on the season.
Bijan Robinson has taken control of the backfield this season and he’s one of the best running backs in the country. Robinson has rushed for 100 yards and scored in each of the past three games, and he starred in this matchup last season. Robinson has rushed for 515 yards and eight touchdowns, while catching 10 passes for 188 yards and a score.
Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington line up on the outside for UT. Worthy had a big game versus WVU, catching seven passes for 119 yards and two scores. Whittington has been steady in each of the first five games, and they’re tied for the team-lead in receptions (21). Worthy leads with 331 receiving yards, while tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders has 20 receptions, 212 yards and a team-lead three touchdowns.
Oklahoma Sooners
Oklahoma jumped out to an ideal 3-0 start but things have been bumpy since the beginning of Big 12 play. After a dominant road win over longtime foe Nebraska, OU was outplayed by Adrian Martinez and Kansas State in their conference opener. Things got worse when they took a trip to Fort Worth last weekend.
In Week 5, Oklahoma embarrassingly lost to TCU, 55-24, failing to come through as road favorites by miles.
Oklahoma scores 37.2 points per game, while allowing 25.2 points per game.
Dillon Gabriel was knocked out of the TCU game, and with his status in the air Brent Venable may have to lean elsewhere at the position. Davis Beville came on for Gabriel last weekend, and went 9/18 for 64 yards. Gabriel was starring with 1,215 passing yards with eleven touchdowns to no interceptions.
Eric Gray has got the bulk of the work early for the Sooners, and he’s made the most of his opportunities. Gray has eclipsed the 100-yard mark three times this season, and he leads OU with 460 rushing yards. Freshman back Jovantae Barnes joins him, and he rushed for a career-high 100 yards in the thumping from TCU.
Marvin Mims looks like the next NFL wideout out of OU. The junior receiver had a career day in the win over Kent State, catching seven passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns. He’s going to have to make some noise if the Sooners wants to have a chance this weekend. He leads Oklahoma with 22 catches for 438 receiving yards and three scores.

The Longhorns have the Sooners in an unfamiliar, vulnerable position, and they can go in for the kill this weekend. This will feel personal, and hanging a third straight loss on their arch rivals, while earning that coveted signature win for the season, will provide more than enough motivation for Steve Sark’s group to go and get it done.
