Tennessee looks like it is ready to climb in the SEC East. They were much better in the second half last season.
South Carolina less so. There is a lot of heat on Will Muschamp right now and even the pandemic might not save his job. Only wins can.
This is a game that both teams need but for different reasons. The spread was smaller than I expected.
The Vols finished last year with six straight wins last year. A couple of them were really solid too so now they just have to keep things going.
They are recruiting very well but that might not yield much in terms of results this season. The big thing for Tennessee is whether QB Jarrett Guarantano has take it to another level. They only scored 24.2ppg last season.
The offensive line returns four starters and there is enough skill talent around him to the point that is is kind of on him to perform now. In the past he has solid excuses.
The defense was in the middle of the SEC last season and is retooling. Coach Jeremy Pruitt is a very good defensive mind though and I am not overly worried about them there.
Tennessee needs this one. They are favored and travelling and can’t fall trap finding ways to lose the way they have in the past. It is in front of them.
South Carolina Gamecocks
Will Muschamp is just one game over .500 at South Carolina, a record no doubt helped by wins over teams like Charleston Southern over the year. There are no easy ones this season.
Mike Bobo was brought in to spice up the offense. QB Collin Hill transferred in to play for his former coach and he has won the job to start the season.
There is not a ton around him though now that MarShown Lloyd is out. He was supposed to be a game changer at running back.
The defense usually has one or two NFL ready players but they were near the bottom of the SEC last season. Middle linebacker Earnest Jones returns after leading the team in tackles as a sophomore. He will be very busy once again.

Free Week 4 NCAA Football Pick
I really want to believe that Tennessee is over the hump and not threatened by a very limited South Carolina team. I am just not sure I want to put my money there the first game of the season.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Tennessee -3.5
I do think that if you like Tennessee this is a gift. Sure we could get a wild one in week one given all that is going on in the world but I also think Tennessee is better everywhere on the field.
Guarantano always makes me a little nervous but if he is responsible with the football there is no reason Tennessee shouldn’t win going away.
