Owls vs. Rockets Gameday
Temple heads to Toledo Saturday for a Week 3 matchup with the Rockets at the Glass Bowl. Kickoff is set for 3:00 PM ET on CBS Sports Network.
The Owls are 1-1 after opening with a 38-14 win over Rhode Island before losing 27-9 to No. 16 Penn State. Temple actually led the Nittany Lions 3-0 and trailed only 10-3 at halftime before Penn State finally created some separation.
Temple lost by 18, but making Penn State work into the second half wasn’t exactly wasted effort.
Toledo is also 1-1 under first-year head coach Mike Jacobs. The Rockets lost 30-20 at Michigan State before returning home and flattening Central Connecticut State 63-10.
Ten different Rockets scored touchdowns in that one.
Saturday is the first meeting between these former conference opponents since Toledo beat Temple 32-17 in the 2015 Boca Raton Bowl. The Rockets lead the all-time series 8-3 and have won the last two meetings.

Temple Owls vs. Toledo Rockets Odds & Last 5
Toledo opened as the favorite and remains in that role, with the Rockets currently laying 5.5 points at home. Temple is around +190 on the moneyline, while Toledo is priced near -220.
The total has drawn more attention.
After opening around 52.5, the number has dropped to 50.5. That’s worth noting after Toledo’s first two games produced 50 and 73 combined points, while Temple’s finished with 52 and 36.
Temple gets its first road test of the season.
The Owls were competitive against Penn State for a half and have now rushed for at least 176 yards in both games. Toledo, meanwhile, has won seven straight at the Glass Bowl by an average margin of 40.3 points.
That home streak has some teeth. Beating Central Connecticut State by 53 probably added a little extra dental work.
Rockets Stats
Toledo has scored 83 points through two games, with 63 coming in last week’s home opener. The Rockets have produced 844 total yards while showing balance between the passing and rushing games.
John Alan Richter has been the centerpiece.
Richter has thrown for 448 yards, five touchdowns and only one interception. He posted a career-high 252 yards and three scores against Central Connecticut State, including an 85-yard touchdown pass to Rico Bond.
Richter leads the MAC with five touchdown passes, but Temple represents a substantial upgrade from last week’s resistance.
Connor Walendzak has supplied balance on the ground.
Walendzak scored twice last week, once rushing and once receiving, while Toledo spread touchdowns among 10 different players. The Rockets have also been especially dangerous after halftime, outscoring opponents 41-18 through two games.
The defense joined the party against Central Connecticut State.
Toledo allowed only 139 total yards and seven first downs while Isaac Zay recorded his first career interception. After giving up 30 at Michigan State, holding anybody to 10 was a welcome change of scenery.
The Glass Bowl has also become a fairly unpleasant destination. Toledo has won seven consecutive home games, with those victories coming by an average of better than 40 points.
Owls Stats
Temple has scored 47 points through two games, but its most dependable offensive production has come on the ground. The Owls are averaging 201.5 rushing yards per game.
Keveun Mason has been the engine.
Mason has rushed for 234 yards through two games, the best two-game start by a Temple running back since Jahad Thomas in 2015. The Owls have topped 176 rushing yards in each game and can make it three straight for the first time since 2011.
The quarterback situation has been more complicated.
Jaxon Smolik has thrown for 116 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while Ajani Sheppard has added 133 passing yards. Sheppard also produced Temple’s only touchdown against Penn State with a three-yard fourth-quarter run.
Temple’s defense deserves some credit for that Penn State game.
The Owls twice stopped the Nittany Lions after they moved inside the five-yard line and held them to 10 first-half points. Linebacker Curly Ordonez led Temple with 12 tackles and a sack.
That’s the formula Temple brings to Toledo: run the football, make the Rockets earn their points and avoid turning Saturday into a 63-point carnival.

Owls vs. Rockets QB Matchup
John Alan Richter has established himself as Toledo’s starter through two games. The junior has thrown for 448 yards, five touchdowns and one interception, including three scores in last week’s blowout.
His big-play ability has already shown up twice.
Richter has touchdown passes of 60 and 85 yards, so Temple’s safeties won’t be spending Saturday sightseeing.
Richter connected with Adjatay Dabbs for a 60-yard score at Michigan State before hitting Rico Bond for 85 yards against Central Connecticut State. Those explosive plays give Toledo a quick-strike element Temple has to respect.
Jaxon Smolik has shared Temple’s quarterback work with Ajani Sheppard.
Smolik helped produce Temple’s best first-half drive against Penn State, including a career-long 47-yard run. Sheppard handled the final scoring drive and connected with Jayce Freeman for 39 yards before running in the touchdown himself.
Neither has produced big passing numbers.
That’s less concerning if Mason keeps the running game moving. Temple doesn’t need a quarterback duel with Richter; it needs manageable downs, long possessions and enough passing production to stop Toledo from crowding the box.
Owls vs. Rockets bottom line: Toledo just put 63 on the board, but Temple’s preferred Saturday involves Mason chewing clock and its defense making every Rockets touchdown require more work than ordering one against Central Connecticut State.

Here is my Owls Rockets free pick: Under 50.5 is my play Saturday at the Glass Bowl. Toledo just hung 63 on Central Connecticut State, which makes an Under ticket look mildly ridiculous at first glance. Fortunately, we’re not asking CCSU’s defense for a second opinion.
Temple gave Penn State a much tougher afternoon. The Owls held the Nittany Lions to 10 first-half points and twice stopped them after they reached the Temple five-yard line.
That’s more useful to me than Toledo’s 63-point demolition.
Temple has enough defense and enough running game to make this considerably uglier than Toledo’s home opener.
The Owls are averaging 201.5 rushing yards, with Keveun Mason already at 234. That gives Temple a way to shorten possessions without putting everything on Jaxon Smolik.
Toledo can play some defense too.
The Rockets held Central Connecticut State to 139 yards and seven first downs. Even against Michigan State, Toledo stayed competitive into the fourth quarter before losing 30-20.
I also like that the total has already come down from its opener.
Richter gives Toledo enough passing ability to create points, but Temple’s best route is Mason, defense and a game that doesn’t turn frantic. If the Owls can keep this hanging around into the second half, 50.5 starts looking like plenty.
Under 50.5 is my play.
