The Temple Owls will travel and take on the Memphis Tigers from the Liberty Bowl this Saturday on ESPNU. Memphis will open as the 19-point favorites, with the total opening at 51.5.
HISTORY: Memphis and Temple have met in nearly every season since the American Athletic Conference was formed back in 2013. Temple leads the all-time series 4-3, with the host winning each of the seven matchups.
Temple Owls
Temple will open AAC play on the road here after splitting their first four games. The Owls was humbled by Duke in Week 1, but after the shutout they responded with a win over in-state school Lafayette in their home opener. Temple had a big opportunity as 18-point home underdogs when they hosted Rutgers seven days later, but they lost the game by two points.
Last Saturday, Temple got back into the win column with a shutout of UMass, 28-0, covering for the third week in a row.
E.J. Warner took over after Week 1, and his genes simply may have made Temple more competitive instantly. E.J., the son of legendary Rams QB Kurt Warner, has game-managed each of his first three starts well. The freshman quarterback threw a pair of touchdown passes in wins over Lafayette & UMass, and he had the Owls in position to upset Rutgers at home.
Warner has thrown for 561 passing yards with five touchdowns to two interceptions through his first three starts.
Coach Stan Drayton has taken the committee approach early with the run game. Darvon Hubbard and Edward Saydee have split the load early. Hubbard leads the Owls in rushing with 116 despite missing the Rutgers game, while Saydee has rushed for 106 yards in four games. NDSU transfer and backup QB Quincy Patterson has also contributed to ground game in designed packages, scoring a team-lead two rushing touchdowns.
Adonicas Sanders has been Warner’s go-to guy early. The Georgia Tech transfer caught eight balls versus Rutgers, and four passes for 101 yards and a score in the win over UMass. Sanders leads the team with 17 receptions for 236 receiving yards, while senior wideout Jose Barbon is second with 16 catches and 183 yards.
Memphis Tigers
Memphis responded to a season opening loss to border rival Mississippi State by closing the first month of action with three wins. The Tigers opened AAC play with a road win over Navy, then they took down Arkansas State in their home opener. Ryan Silverfield’s team found themselves in another shootout last Saturday, with the defense providing a dose of firepower.
Last weekend, Memphis defeated North Texas at home, 44-34, dropping to 1-3 against the spread this season. The over is now 4-0 in Tigers’ games as well.
It feels like Seth Henigan is in the midst of a nice second-year leap. The sophomore QB looks a lot more comfortable this season, and he’s protecting the football better. Henigan burned his hometown team last weekend with the win over North Texas, and he torched Navy for a career-best 415 passing yards in the AAC opener.
Henigan threw for 1,081 passing yards with eight touchdowns to one interception, and he scored a pair of rushing touchdowns during the month of September.
Brandon Thomas, Jeyvon Ducker, and Asa Martin all received substantial work in the first four games. Thomas led the Tigers in rushing last season, and he’s coming off of his best game of the year, rushing for 84 yards and scoring twice in the win over UNT. Ducker has provides some electricity, and he’s gained 218 yards on 31 touches. Martin, a fifth-year senior, gained 57 yards on 10 touches in last weekend’s victory.
Henigan has spread the ball out well through the first month of the season, but his rapport with Caden Prieskorn has stood out the most. The junior tight end has served as a security blanket for the QB, and they’ve connected for touchdowns in each of the past three games (wins). Prieskorn has a caught a team-lead 15 receptions for 138 yards and four touchdowns. Gabe Rogers leads the receiver core with 221 receiving yards.

Memphis comes into this one heavily favored, and rightfully so. They’ve turned things on a bit since their Week 1 loss, and they look like they could be threats in the AAC this season. While Temple could indeed have something special with Kurt Warner’s son at quarterback, this will be a tough road spot for the young QB.
There is indeed a noticeable theme and trend with the Tigers’ game this season. All four have been shootouts, with the lowest total clocking at 50, against Navy at that. Memphis should win this game, but asking them to lay the points against a gritty Temple feels troublesome, when we can ride the over trend. The Tigers should do the heavy lifting, with the Owls adding just enough to cover.
