Orange vs. Panthers Gameday
Syracuse heads to Acrisure Stadium on Thursday night for its first road game of the season and second consecutive ACC matchup. The Orange enter at 1-1 after falling 21-18 to California, while Pittsburgh is 2-0 after beating UCF 12-7.
This is Syracuse’s first of three straight road games, with a bye mixed into a 35-day stretch away from the JMA Wireless Dome. The Orange have won their first true road game in five consecutive seasons and will try to extend that streak against a familiar opponent.
Pitt has been especially difficult for Syracuse in Pittsburgh, winning 11 consecutive meetings at Acrisure Stadium.
The Panthers have won 20 of the last 24 meetings in this longtime ACC rivalry.
Last season’s meeting ended with Pitt winning 30-13 in Syracuse. The Panthers lead the all-time series 45-33-3, and Thursday will mark the 82nd meeting between programs that have played annually since 1955.

The total has settled around 51.5 after opening considerably higher.
Syracuse enters after a frustrating 21-18 loss to Cal in which the Orange produced 436 yards and 27 first downs. Steve Angeli threw for 306 yards, but three interceptions and 15 penalties for 132 yards helped erase Syracuse’s statistical advantages.
Pitt followed its 59-14 destruction of Miami (Ohio) with a much different 12-7 victory over UCF. The Panthers held the Knights to 206 total yards and only 20 rushing yards, allowing their defense to carry an offense that produced 315 yards.
The rivalry history heavily favors Pitt. The Panthers have won 20 of the last 24 meetings overall and 11 straight against Syracuse at home, including a long stretch of success under Pat Narduzzi.

Pittsburgh’s first two games have demonstrated two completely different ways to win. The Panthers erupted for 646 yards and 59 points against Miami (Ohio), then leaned almost entirely on their defense to survive UCF in Week 2.
Mason Heintschel has completed 49 of 70 passes for 665 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions. He threw all seven touchdowns in the opener before completing 18 of 29 passes for 212 yards in difficult conditions against UCF.
The Panthers have been particularly stingy against the run.
Pitt has allowed only 47 rushing yards through two games, including just 20 against UCF. The Panthers also held the Knights to nine first downs and stopped all three of their fourth-down attempts in Saturday’s victory.
Damon Ferguson Jr. provided Pitt’s only touchdown against UCF, rushing for 59 yards in his first career start. His 13-yard second-quarter score helped the Panthers build enough of a cushion for their defense to finish the job.
Orange Stats
Syracuse has generated 949 total yards through its first two games, including 436 against Cal. The Orange threw for 318 yards as a team Saturday and finished with 27 first downs, but turnovers and penalties repeatedly stalled promising possessions.
The defense has quietly been the steadier side of the ball. Syracuse has allowed only 17 points through two games, with opponents averaging 204 total yards, 67 rushing yards and 140.5 passing yards per contest.
Those defensive numbers rank among the better early-season marks nationally.
Steve Angeli threw for 306 yards against Cal, while Justus Ross-Simmons returned to the lineup and immediately gave Syracuse another downfield option. Daunte Bacheyie also produced a career-high 73 receiving yards and caught his second touchdown of the season.
The biggest issue has been self-inflicted damage. Syracuse committed 15 penalties for 132 yards against Cal and turned the ball over three times, leaving the Orange with plenty to clean up before facing a Pitt team that has been much more efficient protecting possession.

Mason Heintschel enters Thursday firmly established as Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback. The sophomore has completed 70% of his passes for 665 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions through two games, following a productive freshman season in which he took over the Panthers’ offense.
Heintschel’s season opener was spectacular, as he threw for 453 yards and an ACC-record seven touchdowns against Miami (Ohio). Heavy rain changed the assignment against UCF, but he protected the football and completed 18 of 29 passes for 212 yards.
Steve Angeli is also unquestionably Syracuse’s QB1 after returning from the Achilles injury that ended his 2025 season. He was officially named the starter in August and opened 2026 by throwing for 263 yards and three touchdowns against New Hampshire.
Angeli’s second game was much rougher.
He completed 24 of 49 passes for 306 yards against Cal but threw three interceptions, including one that ended Syracuse’s final possession. His ability to attack downfield remains important, but avoiding those turnover-worthy mistakes becomes even more critical against an aggressive Pitt defense.
Syracuse Orange vs. Pittsburgh Panthers bottom line: Pitt brings a 2-0 record, dominant rivalry history and an excellent early-season defense into Thursday, while Syracuse has shown enough offensive production to be dangerous if it cleans up its turnovers and penalties.

That matters when I’m getting double digits. Syracuse doesn’t need to outplay Pitt for four quarters, and Steve Angeli showed he can move the offense even on a night when his decision-making cost the Orange.
Pitt deserves respect after starting 2-0, but Saturday’s 12-7 win over UCF was hardly an offensive clinic. The Panthers managed 315 yards and converted only five of 18 third downs after exploding against Miami (Ohio) in their opener.
Double digits feels heavy for a Syracuse team capable of moving the football through the air.
The concern is Pitt’s defense, especially after it held UCF to 206 yards. Still, Syracuse’s passing game presents a different challenge, and Angeli has enough weapons to keep the Orange within striking distance if he protects the football better.
Pitt has owned this rivalry at home, so I’m not calling for an outright upset. I’m asking Syracuse to stay within two scores in an ACC game where both teams have already shown they can win ugly.
