The Syracuse Orange will travel to Death Valley and take on the Clemson Tigers in a battle of oranges this Saturday on ABC. Clemson comes into this one as the 13-point favorites at home, with the total opening at 51.5.
HISTORY: Clemson and Syracuse have crossed paths in every season since the Orange came over from the Big East. Syracuse pulled off one of their bigger wins in school history with a home win over Clemson, but the Tigers lead the all-time series 8-2. Clemson won last year’s meeting, 20-17.
Syracuse Orange
Syracuse opened their season with a 24-point win over Louisville, and they’ve been sharp since. The Orange traveled and blew out longtime Big East foe Connecticut, then picked up a quality non-conference win over Purdue at home in a shootout. Syracuse defeated Virginia on a last-minute field goal, before shutting out Wagner for their homecoming game. Dino Babers’ team came out of their bye and picked their biggest win of the season last Saturday.
In Week 7, Syracuse defeated N.C. State at home, 24-9, improving to 5-1 against the spread this season.
Syracuse scores 36.2 points per game, while allowing 13.2 ppg.
Garrett Shrader has Syracuse in position to top last week’s effort. The junior quarterback has been very effective this season, hurting opponents with his arm and legs. Shrader totaled 291 yards (210 pass, 81 rush), tossed a pair of touchdowns in the win over N.C. State.
Shrader has thrown for 1,434 passing yards with 12 touchdowns to three interception through his first five starts, while also rushing for 300 yards and five scores.
Sean Tucker had a monster freshman season for Syracuse last season, going for 1,496 rushing yards and 12 scores, and he’s on-pace to do so again. Tucker gained 184 yards from scrimmage (100 rush, 84 rec) against Louisville, and he exploded for a career-high 232 yards in win over Wagner.
Tucker brings versatility, and he’s rushed for 644 yards and six touchdowns, while catching 23 passes for 198 receiving yards through the first six games.
Orondo Gadsden II’s rapport with Shrader has been impressive early. The sophomore wideout had big games in victories over Purdue and Virginia, but he topped himself last time out. Gadsen II posted career-highs of eight catches for 141 yards for a pair of touchdowns in the win over the Wolfpack. Gadsden II leads Syracuse in receptions (31), receiving yards (507), and touchdowns (5).
Clemson Tigers
Clemson looks real again this season, and a win here would send them into their bye with a ton of momentum with four games left. The Tigers have passed every test this season, defeating a number-ten ranked N.C. State team at home, and picking up a win in WInston-Salem over Wake in a shootout. Dabo Swinney’s team kept things going last weekend in Tallahassee.
is off to a much better start here in 2022 then last year. The Tigers opened the season with an ACC win over Georgia Tech, and covered the huge 24-point spread. Clemson then welcomed Furman for their home opener, before hosting LA Tech last Saturday in Death Valley.
In Week 7, Clemson defeated Florida State, 34-28, improving to 5-2 ATS this season.
Clemson scores 38.6 points per game, while allowing 19.7 ppg.
DJ Uiagalelei’s summer improvements have shown this season. The junior quarterback had a remarkable performance in the win over Wake Forest, passing for a season-high 371 passing yards and tossing a career-high five touchdowns. Uiagalelei has passed for three touchdowns in each of the past two games, and he’ll be ready for this rugged Syracuse defense.
Uiagaelei has thrown for 1,665 yards with 17 touchdowns to two interceptions, and he’s rushed for 337 yards and four scores score through the first seven games.
Will Shipley has been a game-changer at the running back position. The sophomore running back scored twice in each of the three games this season, and he rushed for 121 yards in the win over FSU. Shipley leads the Tigers with 567 yards rushing and eight touchdowns.
Antonio Williams and Beau Collins are the primary pass catchers for Clemson. Williams, a true freshman, leads the team in receptions (24) and receiving yards (334), and he caught a 59-yard touchdown pass in win over the Seminoles. Collins has been a lot more explosive, catching 18 passes for 290 yards and scoring in five of six games this season. His status for this weekend will be worth monitoring.

This ACC bout gave us a great matchup last season in New York, and while this matchup has all of the ingredients to be just as strong, this will mark Syracuse’s first real test outside of the dome. Death Valley will no doubt have an effect on this game, and it has a good chance of rattling what the Orange have going.
Clemson once again has the look of contender, and this contest will serve as a resume builder, as the Tigers look to build momentum heading into the final month of the season. Syracuse has been impressive this season, but they may meet their match here in SC this weekend. This may have blowout potential, but it also may not be a one-sided affair, so I like the manageable total here. Look for Dabo Swinney’s squad to come out sharp and do the heavy lifting for their homecoming game.
