Stanford Cardinal
An early start to Pac-12 play has given Stanford a bit of trouble. After roughing Colgate up in their opener, the Cardinal have picked up three conference losses swiftly. They were overmatched by USC in Week 3, and after their bye, they couldn’t keep up with Washington. Stanford then faced both schools from the Beaver State, falling to Oregon in Week 5, then hosting their arch rival last weekend.
In Week 6, Stanford lost to Oregon State, 28-27, covering the 6-point spread despite blowing a 14-point fourth quarter lead.
Stanford has scored 29.1 points per game, 32.8 ppg.
A return to the palm trees did Tanner McKee some justice. Hosting SC, then traveling to Seattle and the Zoo was tough way to start conference play, and he played well despite the final result versus Oregon State. He struggled against Notre Dame last season though, so we’ll see how he follows up this solid showing.
McKee has thrown for 1,249 passing yards with ten touchdowns to four interceptions.
E.J. Smith flashed a glimpse of both his father and his own potential in the opener against Colgate, going for 118 rushing yards and two scores, but he’s missed the last two games. Casey Filkins has stepped in and capitalized, and he now leads the team with 339 rushing yards.
Fifth-year senior Michael Wilson leads the team in receiving a pair of two-score outings and a career performance against Washington. Wilson leads the team in receptions (17), receiving yards (352) and touchdowns (4).
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Notre Dame got a much-needed, statement win prior to their bye. After playing Ohio State close in Week 1, an embarrassing loss to Marshall happened in their home opener. The Fighting Irish then avoided another disaster by defeating Cal to earn their first win, and earned a much-needed victory over UNC on the road in their ACC opener. Notre Dame then topped that effort last weekend with a marquee victory.
In Week 6, Notre Dame defeated BYU in a battle of Independents, 28-20, improving to 3-2 ATS this season.
Drew Pyne separated himself from the pack with his outing against UNC, and he topped it in the BYU game. After throwing for a career-high 289 yards and three touchdowns against the Heels, he tossed for three scores versus the Cougs last weekend.
Pyne is up to 721 passing yards with nine touchdowns to two interceptions through three games.
There’s talent in the backfield with veteran Chris Tyree and Audric Estime, and they finally got things going against UNC. Estime rushed for a season-high 134 yards and he scored on the ground, while Tyree racked up 104 yards (80 rush, 24 rec) and scored on the ground.
Tight End U has another one with Michael Mayer. The junior tight end is on-pace to lead the Fighting Irish again after being one of the lone bright spots over the first two weeks. Mayer caught five passes in the opener against Ohio State, and he brought in eleven receptions for 118 yards and two scores in the win over BYU. He leads ND with 33 catches, 351 receiving yards, and five touchdowns.

Marcus Freeman’s team is beginning to gain steam, and after a big win over BYU, they have a chance to keep the party going. Five straight wins and a return to the polls seems very possible with execution here and versus UNLV next weekend.
Stanford just can’t seem to put it together and finish a game, and it could get worse this weekend. I like riding Notre Dame’s momentum this weekend, as it appears these two rival schools are headed in different directions.
