Cardinal vs. Blue Devils Gameday
Stanford heads east Saturday for a Week 3 ACC matchup against Duke at Wallace Wade Stadium. Kickoff is set for 4:00 PM ET on The CW, and this will be Stanford’s first road game of the season.
The Cardinal is 1-1 after beating Hawaii 37-27 before getting flattened 45-6 by No. 7 Miami. Stanford had last weekend off, which probably wasn’t the worst time to spend a Saturday without another scoreboard involved.
Stanford had two weeks to forget the Miami game; Duke will be happy to refresh its memory.
Duke has had a considerably better September. The Blue Devils opened with a 17-3 win over Tulane, then went to Illinois and rallied from a 24-14 deficit for a 31-27 victory. Manny Diaz’s team has now won six straight games dating back to last season.
Nate Sheppard has powered both victories. He’s rushed for 374 yards and three touchdowns through two games, giving Duke something reliable to lean on while Walker Eget settles into the offense.
Both teams are ACC members, but this is their first conference meeting. Stanford is also trying to snap an 11-game road losing streak that dates back to its 2024 win at Syracuse.

Stanford Cardinal vs. Duke Blue Devils Odds & Last 5
Duke opened as an 11.5-point home favorite before the market tightened. The Blue Devils are now laying around 10 points, with Stanford returning roughly +320 on the moneyline. The total remains around 51.5.
Stanford’s two games have looked nothing alike. The Cardinal produced 483 yards and rallied late to beat Hawaii 37-27, then managed only six points against Miami despite Davis Warren throwing for 214 yards.
At least Stanford hasn’t been giving the football away.
The Cardinal offense has gone two games without a turnover, while the defense has forced one in each. That ball security is useful, but eventually Stanford needs to start turning some of those possessions into touchdowns instead of congratulating itself for returning the football politely.
Duke has won differently each week. Sheppard bulldozed Tulane for 227 rushing yards in the opener, then Eget threw three touchdown passes as the Blue Devils erased a 10-point deficit at Illinois.
The Blue Devils have also won six straight overall. Stanford hasn’t won a road game in almost exactly two years.
Blue Devils Stats
Duke’s offense starts with Sheppard, and there hasn’t been much mystery about it. He’s carried 59 times for 374 yards and three touchdowns through two games. His 227-yard opener against Tulane was the fifth-highest single-game rushing total in school history.
Illinois knew what was coming and still didn’t solve it.
Sheppard followed with 147 yards on 24 carries and added two receiving touchdowns in Champaign. He’s now topped 100 rushing yards in three consecutive games dating back to last season.
Sheppard has 374 yards in two games, so Stanford’s first defensive priority isn’t exactly difficult to identify.
Walker Eget has added 337 passing yards and three touchdowns without an interception. All three scores came against Illinois, when he completed 15 of 21 passes for 206 yards.
Duke’s defense has been good enough to complement that formula. The Blue Devils held Tulane to 258 yards and three points, then shut Illinois out of the end zone after halftime.
That Illinois finish deserves some attention.
Duke trailed 24-14 late in the second quarter before outscoring the Illini 17-3 the rest of the way. Evan Smith’s fourth-quarter interception helped protect the lead, while the offense put together a 10-play drive for the final field goal.
Cardinal Stats
Stanford has scored 43 points through two games, although 37 came in the opener against Hawaii. The Cardinal followed that performance by reaching Miami territory several times without finding the end zone.
Davis Warren has still moved the football.
Warren threw for a career-high 310 yards and a touchdown against Hawaii, then added 214 against Miami. He has 524 passing yards through two games and hasn’t thrown an interception.
The lack of turnovers is legitimately encouraging.
Stanford hasn’t committed an offensive turnover this season and has won the turnover battle in both games. Unfortunately, protecting the ball only goes so far when the other team scores 45 and your offense settles for six.
Micah Ford remains the main threat on the ground.
Ford rushed for 99 yards and three touchdowns against Hawaii, earning ACC Running Back of the Week honors. Miami held him to 27 yards, leaving Stanford without the balance that helped Warren throw for 310 in the opener.
The Cardinal now faces its first road assignment. Stanford has dropped 11 consecutive games away from home, with its last road victory coming at Syracuse in September 2024.

Cardinal vs. Blue Devils QB Matchup
Walker Eget has settled into Duke’s offense without being asked to carry it. He has completed 28 passes for 337 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions through two games.
The Illinois game showed a little more of what Duke has in the passing game. Eget completed 15 of 21 for 206 yards and three touchdowns as the Blue Devils rallied from a 10-point deficit.
Eget hasn’t thrown a pick yet, and having Sheppard beside him is a fairly luxurious safety blanket.
That balance is the difficult part for Stanford. Loading up against Sheppard risks creating cleaner throwing windows for Eget, while playing lighter boxes hasn’t exactly worked against Duke’s running back so far.
Davis Warren has been asked to do considerably more.
The Stanford starter has attempted 75 passes through two games, throwing for 524 yards and one touchdown without an interception. He topped 300 against Hawaii and then faced a much nastier assignment against No. 7 Miami.
Warren needs some help finishing drives.
Stanford moved inside Miami territory on multiple possessions but came away with only two field goals. Against Duke, 300-yard passing numbers won’t mean much if the Cardinal keeps treating the end zone like restricted campus parking.
Cardinal vs. Blue Devils bottom line: Duke can score through Sheppard or Eget, while Stanford has moved the ball better than six points against Miami suggests, so 51.5 may need only a little cooperation from the Cardinal before the Blue Devils do the heavy lifting.

Here is my Cardinal Blue Devils free pick: Over 51.5 is my play Saturday in Durham. Duke has shown two ways to score, grinding Tulane down with Nate Sheppard before Walker Eget threw three touchdowns at Illinois. That balance matters against a Stanford defense Miami just carved up for 45 points.
Stanford can help more than the six points against Miami suggest. Davis Warren threw for 310 yards against Hawaii, then 214 against the Hurricanes. Stanford moved it some; finishing drives was the problem.
They need touchdowns instead of clean stat sheets.
Sheppard has 374 rushing yards already, giving Duke a pretty convenient way to keep drives moving.
Duke has the more dependable scoring pieces, and Sheppard has been a problem from the opening kick. If Stanford crowds the box, Eget showed at Illinois that he can make somebody pay.
Duke doesn’t need Stanford to become Oregon for this number to work.
The Cardinal scored 37 against Hawaii and Warren has already produced 524 passing yards. A couple of Stanford touchdowns would leave Duke positioned to do the remaining work.
Duke has scored 48 through two games, while Stanford has already played games totaling 64 and 51 points.
If the Cardinal avoids another Miami-style disappearing act, 51.5 is reachable. I see Duke getting into the 30s and Stanford contributing enough to finish the job.
Over 51.5 is my play.
