With three wins already, the Miners have more than they have had in the last three seasons, combined.
Of course, they are not a juggernaut, but they might not be a joke anymore.
Southern Miss has just one win on the season. It came on the road a couple of weeks ago at North Texas.
Southern Miss Golden Eagles
Beating North Texas is nothing special but things were looking pretty bleak in Hattiesburg. Starting a season 0-3 at home and your coach resigning is about as bad as it gets.
Last week the Golden Eagles found some offense, scoring a season high 41 points. They are 23rd in the nation in passing offense.
They do have a familiar name in the backfield in Frank Gore Jr. He is not powerful like his dad, but the freshman is coming off his best game. The freshman ran for 130 yards last week.
Southern Miss does have to tighten things up on defense. They have not yielded less than 31 points in a game this season. They have not played a bunch of top offenses either.
For respectability sake a win on Saturday would be great. I am not sure they should be favored though.
UTEP Miners
The Miners might be 3-2 overall but they are just 0-1 in Conference USA. Only one of those wins is against an FBA opponent, Louisiana-Monroe.
For a program that had sunk as far as the Miners any hint of success is promising. Now they have to defend their home field.
The defense has been good. While the competition has been light they have been stingy yielding just 22ppg. (and that included giving up 59 to Texas)
The offense has to find something though. They are scoring just 18ppg. QB Davin Hardison has to be more efficient. He is in his first year as a starter.
