Jaguars vs. Cougars Gameday
The Southern Jaguars head to Houston on Saturday for their third game of the 2026 regular season. The matchup will be played at TDECU Stadium in Houston, with kickoff scheduled for 6:00 PM CT and coverage available on ESPN+.
Southern enters at 1-1 after bouncing back from a 30-17 loss to Alabama State with a 34-15 victory over Kentucky State. The win gave first-year head coach Marshall Faulk his first victory at Southern.
Houston has won both previous meetings with Southern, scoring at least 55 points each time.
Houston opened its season with a 33-20 win over Oregon State and moved to No. 22 in the polls. The Cougars finished with 533 yards of offense, including 305 through the air and 228 on the ground. They also held Oregon State to only 26 rushing yards.
This will be Southern’s biggest test of the young season.
The Jaguars showed improvement in their second game, but they now face a ranked Big 12 opponent on the road. Houston will be looking to move to 2-0 before opening conference play.

Southern Jaguars vs. Houston Cougars Odds & Last 5
First, let’s take a look at the numbers for Saturday’s matchup. Houston is favored by more than seven touchdowns, with the spread sitting around Cougars -51.5 and the total set at 60.5.
Southern opened its season with a 30-17 loss to Alabama State after leading 17-13 at halftime. The Jaguars responded by defeating Kentucky State 34-15, giving them some momentum heading into Houston.
Southern finished that victory with 372 yards of offense. Kentucky State actually gained 378 yards, but the Jaguars made several big defensive plays and stopped the Thorobreds on all four fourth-down attempts. Tayton James also returned an interception 85 yards for a touchdown.
Houston has played only once, beating Oregon State 33-20 at home. The Cougars gained 533 total yards and controlled the running game on both sides of the football.

Houston showed plenty of offensive balance in its opener. The Cougars scored 33 points while producing 305 passing yards and 228 rushing yards against Oregon State.
Conner Weigman completed 20 of 30 passes for 305 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Amare Thomas was his top target with eight catches for 133 yards and a touchdown.
Makhi Hughes led the rushing attack with 98 yards and a score on 17 carries. Re’Shaun Sanford II added 75 yards and a touchdown, including a 56-yard scoring run. Houston averaged 5.6 yards per rushing attempt.
The Cougars were even better against the run defensively.
Oregon State managed only 26 rushing yards on 25 attempts. Houston also recorded four sacks and forced the Beavers to rely heavily on their passing game throughout the afternoon.
Houston does have a few personnel situations to watch. Stephon Johnson has been cleared to play after his eligibility situation was resolved, while Muizz Tounkara remains sidelined with a foot injury.

Southern looked much better offensively in its second game. After scoring 17 points against Alabama State, the Jaguars put up 34 in their victory over Kentucky State.
Quarterback Christian Johnson completed 15 of 28 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception. He has now thrown for 374 yards through Southern’s first two games.
Trey Holly gave the Jaguars a strong rushing presence against Kentucky State. He carried 21 times for 99 yards and scored twice, while Southern finished with 172 rushing yards as a team.
The Jaguars also received some timely production from their defense.
Tayton James provided the biggest play with his 85-yard interception return for a touchdown. Southern finished with five sacks and 10 tackles for loss while holding Kentucky State to 5-of-17 on third down.
Daejawn Smith led the receiving group with four catches for 72 yards. Isaiah Pina and Khalil Davis caught Johnson’s two touchdown passes, giving Southern multiple options through the air.

Jaguars vs. Cougars QB Matchup
Conner Weigman is the starting quarterback for Houston and enters this matchup after a strong opener. He threw for 305 yards and one touchdown against Oregon State while also scoring on a one-yard run.
Weigman completed 20 of 30 passes and connected with Amare Thomas eight times for 133 yards. Freshman Keisean Henderson is the backup and attempted one pass in limited action against Oregon State.
Southern will counter with Christian Johnson, who has started both games this season.
Johnson completed 17 of 27 passes for 174 yards against Alabama State before improving against Kentucky State. He threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns without an interception in the Jaguars’ first victory.
The matchup gives Houston the advantage in experience, supporting cast and overall offensive firepower. Johnson’s challenge will be keeping Southern on schedule against a Cougars defense that made Oregon State almost completely one-dimensional.

The Jaguars are 1-1 after beating Kentucky State 34-15, yet that final score deserves some context. Southern finished with 372 total yards. Kentucky State actually outgained the Jaguars 378-372, so this was not an offensive avalanche from start to finish.
Houston showed exactly why this matchup points me toward the total. The Cougars held Oregon State to only 26 rushing yards while winning 33-20, and that kind of front-seven control can make Southern one-dimensional in a hurry.
That puts a lot of pressure on Southern to contribute enough points to threaten 61.
Conner Weigman and Houston should create scoring chances, but a spread north of 50 also introduces the possibility of a very controlled second half. If the Cougars build the expected margin, there is little reason to keep pushing tempo and exposing starters.
My college football handicapping approach likes unders when one offense can dominate without needing a shootout. Southern may struggle to hold up its end of this number.
I’ll take Under 60.5 and trust Houston’s defense to keep the Jaguars from making this total uncomfortable.
