South Alabama Jaguars will open up their week one of the College Football season against the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles in a battle of the Southern schools down in the South.
Southern Alabama Jaguars
The Jaguars finished their 2019 season 2-9 under the second year of Steve Campbell’s control. They could have easily gone 5-6 though as they were very competitive in games but finished 1-3 in games decided by 10 points or less. Campbell will try to lead South Alabama above four wins for the first time since the 2016 season when Joey Jones was the head coach.
Redshirt Sophmore Desmond Trotter took over the QB position for the Jaguars in late 2019 and has no intention of giving it up as he was named the starter for 2020. Trotter had a magnificent bowl game to end the season versus Arkansas state posting 279 yards and throwing for four touchdowns. He also ran for 58 yards in that bowl game.
Losing Tra Minter really hurts Steve Campbell’s offense in 2020. He ran for 1,057 yards and five TD’s while adding 32 receptions for 209 yards. Someone is going to have to step up here for South Alabama and fill the shoes he occupied.
The defensive side of the ball is where South Alabama really shines. Only four out of their ten losses were decided by 16 points or more and their defense really helped them stay competitive in these games without getting their doors blown off.
Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles
Jay Hopson’s squad finished the season on the three-game losing streak and will try to get back to their winning ways in 2020. The good thing for the Southern Miss is that they will have seven offensive starters and eight defensive starters returning though.
The Golden Eagles faced one of the toughest schedules in 2019 having to face a couple of SEC opponents. Southern Mississippi faced the likes of Mississippi State, Alabama, and Louisiana Tech taking the loss in all three.
During the offseason, the team changed both their offensive and defensive coordinators from last year as Buster Faulkner is out as offensive coordinator while the co-defensive coordinators Tim Billings and Derek Nicholson were relieved of their duties. Replacing them are offensive coordinator Matt Kubik and defensive coordinator Tony Pecoraro, who was the team’s defensive coordinator back in 2016-17.

Jack Abraham returns for his senior year to be the QB for Hopson’s team after he landed 275 of 405 passes for 3,496 yards with 19 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
The Eagles did lose a key cog in their operation though in WR Quez Watkins who was drafted by the Eagles late in the 2020 draft. He hauled in 64 passes for 1,137 yards plus six TD last year.

Look for the possible upset here but I believe the Golden Eagles pull it out late. Give me the Jaguars +13.5.
