Here’s why I’m backing a USF ATS bet below in my Bulls Roadrunners free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Bulls vs. Roadrunners Gameday
South Florida heads to San Antonio Thursday night for an American Conference matchup with UTSA at the Alamodome. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM ET on ESPN.
Brian Hartline’s Bulls enter 4-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play after suffering their first loss of the season, 17-13 against Temple. USF is still unbeaten on the road at 2-0.
USF lost its perfect record Saturday. UTSA probably shouldn’t expect the Bulls to arrive in a cheerful mood.
Jeff Traylor’s Roadrunners are also 4-1, including a 1-0 conference record and 2-0 mark inside the Alamodome. UTSA has won two straight after surviving Rice 16-14 last Saturday.
There’s some recent baggage here too.
South Florida hammered UTSA 55-23 in Tampa last season, scoring defensive TD’s on each of the Roadrunners’ first two possessions. UTSA won the previous meeting 49-21 at the Alamodome in 2023, leaving the series tied 1-1.
It’s Week 6, South Florida Bulls vs. UTSA Roadrunners, hopefully we get a great matchup.

South Florida Bulls vs. UTSA Roadrunners Odds & Last 5
UTSA opened as a seven-point home favorite, with the Roadrunners priced -290 on the moneyline and South Florida +234.
The Bulls had won four straight before Temple ended their unbeaten start.
USF’s defense did enough to win Saturday, holding Temple to 274 total yards. The offense couldn’t finish the job, and a 96-yard Temple TD drive late in the fourth quarter turned a 13-10 Bulls lead into a 17-13 loss.
UTSA has taken a considerably different route to 4-1.
The Roadrunners scored 59 in a wild win over Colorado State before grinding out only 16 at Rice. UTSA’s defense held the Owls to 232 yards and came up with the late stop it needed to preserve the two-point victory.
Two wins, two completely different scripts. Nobody can accuse the Roadrunners of being boring.

Roadrunners Stats
UTSA has scored 157 points through five games, with Owen McCown directing an offense that has shown it can win through the air or on the ground.
McCown has thrown for 1,010 yards and seven TD’s against two interceptions. The Roadrunners also have some real options behind him in the backfield.
Will Henderson III leads UTSA with 398 rushing yards and three TD’s, while A’Marion Peterson has added 194 yards and four scores. That balance makes it difficult for defenses to sell out against McCown.
The defense is coming off its best performance of the season.
UTSA held Rice to 232 total yards, recorded a season-high 10 tackles for loss and came up with three sacks. After allowing 45 points to Colorado State one week earlier, that was quite the personality change.
The Roadrunners have allowed 131 points overall, so one strong Saturday doesn’t erase everything. It does give Traylor something useful to build on.
Bulls Stats
South Florida has scored 133 points while allowing only 73 through five games.
The defense has been the steadier side lately. USF held Bowling Green to six points before limiting Temple to 17, although that late 96-yard drive against the Owls is going to sting for a while.
The Bulls have also been getting production from the ground game.
D.J. Crowther entered the Temple game off consecutive 100-yard performances before being held to 68 yards. Michael Van Buren Jr. threw for 205 yards against the Owls but couldn’t get USF into the end zone through the air.
The Bulls’ defense has done plenty of heavy lifting. The offense might want to send a thank-you card.
USF has shown it can win away from Tampa.
The Bulls are 2-0 on the road after victories at FIU and Bowling Green. Thursday is a different environment, but the Alamodome won’t be their first suitcase game of the season.
The bigger question is whether the offense can regain the explosiveness it showed earlier in the year. Thirteen points probably won’t travel very far against UTSA.
Bulls vs. Roadrunners QB Matchup
McCown remains the centerpiece of UTSA’s offense.
He’s thrown for 1,010 yards with seven TD’s and two interceptions through five games. His experience also matters in a game where South Florida’s defense has generally made opponents work for points.
Van Buren has taken a more conservative route for USF.
He’s thrown for 922 yards with three TD’s and no interceptions. That clean ball security has helped the Bulls avoid giving opponents cheap possessions.

Saturday against Temple showed the tradeoff.
Van Buren completed 17 of 32 passes for 205 yards but didn’t throw a TD. USF moved the ball well enough to stay alive, yet not well enough to put the game away when it had the chance.
McCown gives UTSA more proven scoring production through the air.
Van Buren has been better at avoiding the mistake that flips a game. With two defenses capable of making life uncomfortable, that contrast could matter more than the raw passing totals.
Neither QB needs to chase the spectacular Thursday night. McCown needs to finish drives, while Van Buren needs to keep USF out of bad situations and make UTSA earn everything it gets.
South Florida Bulls vs. UTSA Roadrunners bottom line: UTSA brings home-field strength and the more productive passing attack, while South Florida arrives with a defense and road résumé capable of making this a four-quarter fight.
South Florida Bulls vs. UTSA Roadrunners Football Betting Trends
- South Florida is 6-0 straight up in their last 6 games after a loss.
- Plus, USF is 5-0 against the spread in their last 5 games after a loss.
- The Bulls are 3-0 straight up in their last 3 away games.
- UTSA is 12-0 on the over in their last 12 home games.
- Additionally, the Roadrunners are 23-3 straight up in their last 26 home games.
- UTSA is 19-5 straight up as a favorite in their last 24 games.
Bulls Roadrunners Free Pick: Bulls +7
Here is my Bulls Roadrunners free pick: I’m taking South Florida +7. The Bulls are coming off their first loss, and they’ve been excellent in this spot, going 5-0 ATS following a defeat.
USF is also 2-0 on the road this season. That matters when I’m getting a full TD against a UTSA team that needed every minute to escape Rice by two points.
UTSA may win this game, but seven points gives the Bulls plenty of room to make that irrelevant.
South Florida’s defense has allowed only 73 points through five games. If that unit keeps this within one possession into the fourth quarter, I’m sitting exactly where I want to be.
And the sportsbooks are giving me the full seven. I’ll take it.
UTSA can have the Alamodome, the favorite tag and the pressure to win by margin. Give me the TD with a Bulls team that’s already 2-0 away from Tampa and coming in annoyed after its first loss.
Give me Bulls +7.
