The South Florida Bulls will travel up I-75 north to Gainesville, and take on the Florida Gators for an in-state battle from The Swamp this Saturday night on the SEC Network. Florida is favored to win big here at home on the road here, with the total opening at 59.5.
HISTORY: After breaking through in the late 2000s, USF was rewarded with a non-conference matchup with Florida, which would later spark a two-game series between the two schools. This will mark the third matchup, and the Gators have won the first two meetings.
South Florida Bulls
USF got roughed up by BYU in the opener, but they got back on track and into the win column last weekend with a victory over FCS-school Howard. The Bison scored first and took a one-score lead into the second quarter, but from their the Bulls buckled down and took care of business.
Last week, South Florida defeated Howard, 42-20, but after starting slow, they missed the improbable 39-point margin by miles.
Gerry Bohanon has come over from Baylor, but it hasn’t looked pretty thus far. He got the job done against the Bison, for the Bulls want to make use of the huge spread they’ll be spotted here, he’ll need to do a lot more than the bare minimum. He thrown for 391 yards on 58.6% passing, with no touchdowns to two interceptions.
Jaren Mangham and Brian Battie returned to man the backfield for USF. Mangham led the Bulls in rushing last season (671), and he’s scored three times over the first two games. Battie has scored in both games as well, including a 60-yard touchdown in the win over Howard.
Xavier Weaver led the team in receiving last season (41 rec, 715 yards), and he’s been Bohanon’s go-to guy early. The junior wideout caught five passes for 113 yards against BYU, and he had seven catches for 57 yards versus Howard.
Florida Gators
Florida kicked off the Billy Napier era with a bang and there’s reason for optimism in Gainesville. The Gators opened 2022 with a big home win over top-10 ranked Utah, but they couldn’t follow up that performance when SEC East rival Kentucky came to the town.
Last weekend, Florida lost to Kentucky (+6.5) at home, 26-16, after failing to score in the second half.
Anthony Richardson is gracing the imfamous #15, but he’s got to bring a bit more to the passing game if the Gators want to take the next step. Richardson game-managed the Utah matchup perfectly, throwing for 168 yards, while rushing for 106 more and scoring three times on the ground. Kentucky made things incredibly tough for the sophomore quarterback last weekend, so expect a bounce back performance here against an in-state foe.
Trevor Etienne and Montrell Johnson Jr. have split the touches well early for the Gators. Johnson Jr. has led the team in rushing in both contests, totaling 137 yards. Etienne, whose brother starred at Clemson, has gained 110 rushing yards and he scored last week.
Xzavier Henderson has been Richardson’s favorite target thus far, catching six passes in both games. Arizona State transfer Ricky Pearsall leads the team in receiving yards (108).
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- USF are 2-4 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
- Florida are 3-3 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
- Bulls are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games.
- Gators are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 home games.
Free Week 3 NCAA Football Final Analysis:
The Gators get an in-state foe in a manageable bounce back spot here, and they should take care of business at home. While they should have no trouble contain USF, their own struggles offensively have been on display early this season. Trusting them to cover against a non-conference foe at the Swamp is never a bad idea, but the total feels a bit high for these two Florida schools.
Look for a physical, run-heavy, one-sided bout here in Gainesville, and take the under here.
