Temple’s offense asserted itself last week against Charlotte gaining over 500 yards of total offense and the defense stepped up after a bad performance against Penn State.
The expectations for Temple this season were somewhat unclear as they well exceed them last season but lost a lot of experience from that team.
On the other side, SMU also has a very young team and is struggling offensively yet again.
After putting up 34 points in their season opener, the Mustangs have combined for 16 in their two losses to Baylor and TCU and barely got past Liberty in a 29-14 win.
Ben Hicks has struggled at quarterback completing only 50 percent of his passes and throwing 7 interceptions.
The run game has helped some but it is difficult to come back from a deficit by running the football.
The Mustangs were able to keep it close with TCU last Friday night before falling apart and letting a 6-3 halftime deficit turn into a 33-3 final score.
While Temple lost a bunch of experience on defense including their All-American linebacker, the new guys have four games under their belt and looked much better last week.
SMU will need to run the ball effectively to compete as Temple’s defense is giving up just 146 passing yards per contest.
The SMU defense has performed well but gets worn out over the course of the game from being on the field so much.
Despite giving up 27 points per game thus far, SMU is only giving up 8 per game in the first half.
Hicks will have to utilize standout receiver Courtland Sutton to get the offense going and help out the defense.
The defense looked much improved last week after a poor performance against Penn State.
They surrendered one big run to Kalif Phillips but other than that kept the Charlotte attack in check.
They forced Charlotte into 18 third down attempts and got six straight stops in the 1st half to help Temple jump out to a 31-7 first half lead.
As Philip Walker and Jahad Thomas go, the Temple offense goes. Last week, they accounted for 354 yards of offense and 4 touchdowns.
Walker didn’t need to do any damage on the ground and Thomas provided steady support in the ground game.
The offense was explosive at times with 6 plays over 20 yards but mostly chewed up clock and wore down the Charlotte defense.
To beat SMU, they are going to need to do the same. The SMU defense has been tough and will be poised to get off to a 2-0 start in conference play.

Free Week 5 NCAA Football Prediction
I think SMU’s offense will continue to struggle and Temple will start to surge towards their form from last season. They could become a real threat in the AAC as they avoid Houston this season and get USF, Cincinnati, and East Carolina all at home.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Temple -12.5
I like Temple to win big in this one but mostly by using their defense. SMU has struggled offensively and I can’t imagine it getting any easier coming way up north for the first time this season.
Week 5 Free Score Prediction: Temple 29 – SMU 10
