Most saw Memphis as the team to possibly take the AAC away from UCF this season. For that to happen they need to win this one.
SMU has been getting by, not dominating, but wins are wins.

I suppose it is the ultimate in disrespect that SMU is such a significant underdog on the road. Prove them wrong, right?
SMU Mustangs
If the Mustangs are going to lose during the regular season this seems like the place. Memphis is a very good team and the Mustangs have struggled on the road.
SMU barely beat Houston last week and that team’s struggles have been well documented. Still there is something to be said about teams that just do enough to win the ballgame.
Shane Buechele has looked good directing the SMU attack but he too often plays with fire. He has more games with an interception than without this season. This is a game where he probably has to be mistake free.
SMU does have balance though, rushing for more than 200 yards per game. Xavier Jones is another senior who will be relied upon in this one. He already has 14 TDs.

The SMU defense has been soft this season, especially against the pass. Their ability to have to their best defensive game when it matters probably determines victory or defeat.
Memphis Tigers
Memphis might have been looking ahead to this one as they barely escaped Tulsa, winning by a point. Their only blemish has been a two-point road loss to Temple. As they have been for some time Memphis is a good team you underrate at your peril.
Like SMU the Tigers lean towards the offense. Brady White is an experienced signal-caller who make very few mistakes. He is patient too.
When leading returning rusher Patrick Taylor went down it opened up a spot for freshman Kenny Gainwell. He has rushed for more than 100 yards in 6 straight games and can catch the ball too.
The reason that Memphis is favoured is that they are stronger on defense than SMU. They are coming off their worst defensive game and need that to be a blip not a trend.
