Ashton Daniels takes over at quarterback for the Florida State Seminoles in 2026. The veteran transfer made his Seminoles debut against New Mexico State and completed 17 of 27 passes. He finished with 202 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Daniels also rushed eight times for 30 yards and a touchdown.
His mobility gives Florida State another dimension in the running game. The Seminoles rushed for 217 yards in their opener, and Daniels was one of four players to reach at least 30 rushing yards. He will now face a much tougher test against SMU.

Florida State already has a game under its belt, but I wasn’t impressed enough by the 34-17 win over New Mexico State to grab the home dog. The Seminoles allowed the Aggies to convert 10 of 17 third downs and needed until the second half to create real separation.
SMU also brings a proven offense into Tallahassee after averaging 283.1 passing yards per game last season. Jennings gives the Mustangs a veteran quarterback who has already beaten this opponent, throwing for 254 yards and three touchdowns in SMU’s 42-16 win over Florida State in 2024. That is a matchup edge I trust.
The number is short enough that I’m comfortable asking SMU to win by a field goal.
Florida State can run the football, and Ousmane Kromah flashed with 115 yards in the opener. Still, SMU is a major step up from New Mexico State, and the Mustangs have had all offseason to prepare for this spot.
