On one side, the 21st ranked scoring offense brings back their quarterback, top rusher, and four offensive linemen with significant starting experience.
The Tulsa offense should be as good as 2015.

On the other side, San Jose State brings back 15 starters including their quarterback and 86 starts on the offensive line. The Spartans however lose 1600 yard rusher Tyler Ervin.
San Jose State Spartans
The Spartans went 5-7 in the regular season last year but made a bowl game (yes – it’s a joke, I know). They did go onto win their bowl game 27-16 over Georgia State.
Despite bringing back 8 offensive starters, expect their 69th ranked scoring offense to decline.
Running back Tyler Ervin was their leading offensive producer and it wasn’t even close. He was their top rusher at 1601 yards with their next rusher being quarterback Kenny Potter at 415 yards.

An experienced offensive line should help the run game be consistent but 1601 yards will be difficult to replace.
Ervin was also their 5th leading receiver and accounted for 15 total touchdowns. Their next closest returning scorer will be Potter who had 7 rushing touchdowns. After that, it is senior tight end Billy Freeman who had 6 touchdowns.
So, the offense certainly will regress. But, Potter is a capable dual-threat quarterback and Tulsa’s defense was the 8th worst in the nation last season.
The Spartans will go as far as Potter can take them in 2016 but against Tulsa, that shouldn’t be too difficult.
An experienced offensive line will help him and the running backs get going and Potter will utilize his weapons – including USC transfer WR Rahshead Johnson.
Tulsa Golden Hurricane
Tulsa had the 11th ranked passing offense in the nation in 2015 and bring back quarterback Dane Evans. Evans threw for 4332 yards at a 63 percent completion rate. His quarterback rating of 151.6 was one of the best in the nation.
The Golden Hurricane will rely on Evans again to keep them in games as their defense will struggle.
Evans loses his top target in Keyarris Garrett (1588 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns) but will welcome back Keevan Lucas – who had 409 receiving yards in four games before getting injured – as well as Josh Atkinson (1071, 5).
D’Angelo Brewer – the Golden Hurricane’s top rusher in terms of yards – returns, but they lose Zack Langer who rushed for 18 touchdowns last season.

Tulsa – an 8-5 team ATS in 2015 – had one of the best covers of the 2015 season.
Reread the box score of their 45-34 win over Tulane on the day after Thanksgiving and imagine having Tulsa -8.5. A thrill I will never forget.
More importantly though, it opened my eyes to Dane Evans and what he is capable of. Tulsa’s defense will restrict them again this season, but Evans will open the eyes of pro scouts – starting off with a good game against the Spartans.

Free Week 1 NCAA Football Prediction
I like Tulsa to win by a touchdown at home as Evans and Potter go blow for blow. The absence of Ervin will lead the Spartans to throw more than last season.
There should be plenty of points in this one.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Tulsa -6
Expect the first half to be low scoring and then both teams to explode in the second half. Keep an eye on the live line for the second half total.
