The San Jose State Spartans got their feel good win over FCS opponent Cal Poly. However, the Texas Longhorns were unable to defend their home turf in Tom Herman’s first game as head coach.
San Jose State Spartans
This will already be San Jose State’s third game of the season as they opened the season at home against – ironically enough – former Texas head coach Charlie Strong and the South Florida Bulls.
They got off to a hot start getting off to a 16-0 lead, however, South Florida crawled their way back and pulled away beating the Spartans 42-22.

San Jose State bounced back with a win against Cal Poly and will look to carry that momentum into Austin against a vulnerable Longhorn team.
It’s been a struggle for the Spartans on the offensive end, but they could potentially move the ball and get things going against an awful Texas defense.
Texas Longhorns
As The Who once said, “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.”
Texas had a lot of problems under Charlie Strong and things didn’t look much different under Tom Herman.

In fact – just a quick aside – I had a friend who doesn’t follow football but was watching the game with me ask, “Didn’t Texas get a new head coach?” That pretty much tells you all you need to know.
Maryland moved the ball at will on the Texas Longhorns defense. The Longhorns allowed 482 total yards and they were gashed for 263 rushing yards and they gashed 6.1 yards per rush.
Conversely, Texas was held to less than 100 yards rushing. They didn’t attempt to really establish a running game and when they did run they didn’t get much done on the ground.
Starting running back sophomore Kyle Porter ran eight times for 21 yards and Chris Warren III – who is an extremely talented running back in his own right – only carried the ball six times for only 31 yards.
Chris Buechele threw the ball 52 times and just about everytime he threw the ball he was under heavy pressure. And, not really surprising, he injured his throwing shoulder and is now questionable in game versus San Jose State.

This year was going to be a struggle for the Longhorns as they have a pretty brutal schedule. And that part of the schedule starts next week when they travel to Southern California to take on the Trojans.
They get a bye the following week and then they proceeded to go back to Ames on a Thursday night where they were humiliated two years ago. Then they play Kansas State, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State.
They really needed to beat Maryland, but they didn’t and now they face the real possibility of going 1-6 to start the season. They will for sure be underdogs in four of their next five games after San Jose State.
Right now, I wouldn’t want to be Tom Herman and you can bet the Longhorn fans will be wanting to hire Chip Kelly once October rolls around.

Free Week 2 NCAA Football Pick
This is a real interesting game. On one hand, you don’t want to overreact because Texas will look better because they have the better athletes than San Jose State.
That’s just a fact. But, can you really trust the Longhorns to cover a 27 point spread? Eh, not really.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: San Jose State +27 ATS
All in all, this is a game to pass. The over/under looks right on point and I don’t exactly trust either team. I could see Texas coming out firing or San Jose State keeping it close enough to cover with Buechele uncertain to start.
Perhaps the best of the worse betting available is taking San Jose State to cover. If Buechele is out then you get value on +27 as the number will drop a couple of points.
