Sam Houston heads to Lynchburg Thursday night to open its Conference USA schedule against Liberty at Williams Stadium.
Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM ET on ESPNU. Phil Longo’s Bearkats enter 1-3 overall, while Jamey Chadwell’s Flames are 4-1 and already 1-0 in conference play.
Liberty wants to keep rolling. Sam Houston had a bye week to figure out how to slow the thing down.
The Bearkats haven’t played since a 49-14 loss at No. 11 Texas Tech on September 26.
That final score got ugly, but Sam Houston was only down seven at halftime. The Bearkats also forced four turnovers before Texas Tech took control in the second half.
Liberty comes in riding a four-game winning streak.
The Flames opened CUSA play with a 30-14 win at Delaware, scoring the game’s first 30 points. They piled up a season-high 282 rushing yards and have now increased their rushing output in every game this season.
These programs have split their first two meetings.
Liberty survived 21-16 in Lynchburg in 2023 after stopping Sam Houston near the goal line on the final drive. The Bearkats returned the favor in 2024, hanging on for a 20-18 victory after denying a late two-point conversion. Liberty opened as a 13.5-point home favorite. The Flames were priced -606 on the moneyline, with Sam Houston at +443. The total opened at 52.5. Liberty has won four straight since its season-opening loss at James Madison.
The Flames have scored at least 30 points in three consecutive games, beating Ball State, Coastal Carolina and Delaware. Chadwell’s offense has become increasingly dangerous on the ground as the season has progressed.
Sam Houston has had a week off to recover from Texas Tech.
The Bearkats’ lone victory came in a 59-0 demolition of Nicholls, but their other two losses before Texas Tech were competitive. Sam Houston lost by three at Troy and six against Tulsa.

Flames Stats
Liberty’s offense has developed a pretty clear personality.
The Flames lead Conference USA at 208.2 rushing yards per game. They’ve increased their rushing total in every game this season, culminating with 282 yards and three rushing TD’s against Delaware.
Kam Davis is becoming a problem.
He followed a 166-yard performance at Coastal Carolina with 147 yards and two TD’s against Delaware. Davis is averaging 7.1 yards per carry through five games.
Deshawn Purdie has given Liberty balance without giving opponents many gifts.
The Flames QB has thrown for 936 yards and seven TD’s without an interception. Makai Jackson leads the receiving corps with 469 yards and gives Purdie a legitimate answer when defenses start creeping downhill to deal with the run.
The defense has done its part too.
Liberty has forced a CUSA-high eight takeaways and held three consecutive opponents below 20 points. The Flames are also allowing opponents to convert only 28.3% of their third downs.
Bearkats Stats
Sam Houston is built almost completely opposite to Liberty.
The Bearkats lead Conference USA at 308 passing yards per game, with 75.5% of their total offense coming through the air. Running the ball has been another story, with Sam Houston averaging only 100 yards per game.
Landyn Locke is the reason the passing numbers look so much better.
He’s thrown for 1,168 yards and 11 TD’s through four games. Nearly half of Sam Houston’s TD’s have come from outside the red zone, including seven scoring passes covering at least 31 yards.
Liberty wants to run downhill all night. Sam Houston would rather turn Thursday into seven-on-seven with shoulder pads.
That quick-strike ability matters for an offense that isn’t getting much help on the ground.
Alton McCaskill has been the primary option with 165 rushing yards and one TD. Five different Bearkats have caught one of those long scoring passes, so Locke isn’t living off one receiver.
The defense has made real progress.

Purdie gives Liberty exactly what this offense needs.
He’s completed 60 of 100 passes for 936 yards with seven TD’s and no interceptions. With Liberty’s running game demanding so much attention, Purdie hasn’t needed to play superhero every Saturday.
That’s usually a pretty comfortable job description for a QB.
Locke carries a much larger share of Sam Houston’s offensive burden. He’s completed 96 of 145 passes and has thrown three interceptions.

Here is my Bearkats Flames free pick: I’m taking Sam Houston +13.5. Liberty deserves to be favored at home, but asking the Flames to win by two TD’s is where I start getting interested in the other side.
Sam Houston has been a good bounce-back team, covering three straight after a loss this season. The Bearkats are also 6-3 ATS when the total is 50 or higher since 2025, so this isn’t exactly unfamiliar territory.
Now give them a bye before the trip to Lynchburg.
Liberty can control this game for three hours and still leave Bearkats bettors smiling.
That’s what I like about the number. The Flames want to run the football, stay efficient and dictate the pace, which is great for winning games but isn’t always the easiest recipe for burying a double-digit underdog.
Sam Houston doesn’t need to match Liberty drive for drive.
I need the Bearkats to land enough punches through the air to keep this from becoming a runaway. They’ve already covered three of four this season, including both games when catching double digits before the trip to Texas Tech.
And 13.5 gives me some room to be wrong. Liberty can lead most of the night. It can win by 10, 11, 12 or 13 and I don’t care who gets the postgame interview. That’s my kind of underdog ticket.
If the Flames win 31-20, everybody in Lynchburg can go home happy. So can I.
