The Purdue Boilermakers will travel to Madison and take on the Wisconsin Badgers from Camp Randall Stadium this Saturday on ESPN. Wisconsin will open as the three-point favorites here at home, with the total opening at 51.5.
HISTORY: There’s no love lost between these two bordering states, with their rivalry dating back to 1899. Wisconsin leads the all-time series 44-38-7, after a recent dominant stretch of winning eleven of the last twelve meetings.
Purdue Boilermakers
Purdue has ripped off four straights wins after a 1-2 start. The Boilermakers wrapped up the non-conference slate by evading a scare from Florida Atlantic and picking up a two-point victory. Purdue opened the month of October with a spooky road upset win over Minnesota, then proceeded to pick up another underdog victory seven days later over Maryland. The Boilermakers found themselves in a shootout last weekend, but found a way to prevail.
In Week 7, Purdue defeated Nebraska, 43-37, dropping to 3-4 against the spread this season.
Purdue scores 34.1 points per game, while allowing 24.1 ppg.
Aidan O’Connell continues to impress in the Air Raid attack. The senior quarterback threw for 391 passing yards and four touchdowns in the high scoring affair with Nebraska, and he looks set to overpower Wisconsin again this season. O’Connell has passed for 1,950 yards with 14 touchdowns to five interceptions on the season.
Dylan Downing and Devin Mockobee have both split the rushing work early. Mockobee leads the team after a huge day last weekend, gaining a career-high 178 yards versus the Huskers, with 453 rushing yards. Downing missed last weekend’s bout, but he has 249 yards and he’s scored in each of his last three games.
O’Connell has shifted to live with David Bell, and he’s found a few new targets this season. Iowa transfer Charlie Jones has come over from Big Ten foe Iowa and made his presence felt immediately. Jones recorded 140 yards or more in his first three games at Purdue, and he caught 12 passes for 132 yards and two scores last weekend. After leaving the pedestrian Hawkeye offense for greener pastures, he leads the Boilermakers in receptions (62), receiving yards (735), and touchdowns (9).
Wisconsin Badgers
It’s been rough for Wisconsin early, and an unexpected coaching change put DC and former safety Jim Leohnard at the forefront. At 2-4, Wisconsin picked up a much needed 35-point win over Northwestern, but their troubles continued last weekend in East Lansing.
In Week 7, Wisconsin lost to Michigan State in double overtime, 34-28, dropping to 3-4 ATS this season.
Wisconsin is scoring 31.3 points per game, while allowing 21.5 ppg.
Graham Mertz returned to his old self last weekend after passing for 300 yards and a career-high five scores in the win over Northwestern. His 131-yard outing was his lowest of the season, but he may have to match Purdue’s energy this weekend. Mertz has passed for 1,427 yards with 15 touchdowns to six interceptions on the season.
The run game has long been a staple of the Wisconsin program. From Ron Dayne to Jonathan Taylor, the Badgers have always produced pro-ready backs. Braelon Allen appears to be the next great back in line. The sophomore running back has really got it going since the start of Big Ten play, surpassing the 140-yard mark in three of four games. Allen leads the Badgers with 757 rushing yards and eight scores.
Third-year wideout Chimere Dike leads the team in receptions (29) and yards (487), after a career-day versus Northwestern.

Big bad Wisconsin keeps getting favored for some reason, and I feel like this is another spot to fade them in spite of a much hotter Purdue team coming into Madison. The Boilermakers have been on a tear since losing to Syracuse, picking up two underdog conference victories already.
Purdue is skilled enough to play Wisconsin’s ground and pound game, but when it comes time to move the ball through the air, its easy to see the Badgers being outmatched by the Boilermakers aerial attack here. Jeff Brohm’s got something good brewing in West Lafayette, and I believe it continues here.
