This is an interesting matchup. Purdue is probably being underrated because of their “situation” but with a new/experienced quarterback and a solid D they are pretty good.
Nevada is always a tough spot to play. They are not as talented as Mizzou, nor are they expected to really threaten in the Mountain West but in the opener at home they could be dangerous.
Purdue Boilermakers
Purdue would appear to be poised for a big 2019 campaign as they are double digit road favorites right out of the gate at Nevada. There’s definitely upside for the Boilermakers after posting the nation’s 11th best passing attack a year ago but the team is still just 13-13 after 2 years with Jeff Brohm at the helm.

Boilermaker fans will be glued to the TV in this one to see how QB Elijah Sindelar fares. He had an 18 TD/ 7 INT season in his sophomore year in 2017 but was lost after 2 games a year ago. The reason fans are glued?
They don’t know how much they’ll see of their QB after he tweaked that same injured ACL this Spring and is questionable for Friday’s game.
One of the major reasons Purdue is favored by 10.5 on the road in the opener is because of the star potential of Rondale Moore. The sophomore erupted on the scene a year ago with 114 catches for 1258 yards and 12 TD. The Nevada defense is solid, but Moore is a transcending talent.
Nevada will unleash it’s “Air Raid” offense in the home opener so how will Purdue’s defense respond? The Boilermakers return 8 starters on that side of the ball but ranked 127th in the country in passing yards allowed a year ago.
Purdue also started off just 1-3 a season ago despite playing the first four games at home. Purdue did finish a respectable 3-2 on the road last year but that was aided by tomato can wins over Illinois and Indiana.
The total for Friday’s season opener is set at 58. A lot of that offense is expected to come from the Purdue side of the offense as they have some of the best skill position talent in the Big Ten. David Ball is another promising target that will get the start as a freshman.
Nevada Wolfpack
Nevada’s #1 issue heading into Friday night’s game is quarterback.

There’s an old saying that if you have three quarterbacks you actually have none and it’s expected that the rotation of Carson Strong, Malik Henry, Cristian Solano, and Austin Kirksey may all get starts at some point this season.
It’s expected that Carson Strong gets the nod vs. Purdue and he’ll be the first freshman to start the season opener for the Wolfpack since 1998. Henry is a former 4-star recruit while Solano had potential to be the starter before breaking his hand and being ruled out indefinitely.
Ultimately Nevada has a lot of pieces to replace in 2019, most importantly 3-year starting QB Ty Gangi and 3 starting O-lineman. The Wolfpack had a top 25 passing attack a season ago but was that more about the experienced QB – or the system?
Nevada can put up some points in this one considering Purdue was 127th in the nation in pass defense a year ago. Can the Wolfpack defenders stop the Boilers though?
Nevada got hot defensively down the stretch last year, holding three of their last 4 opponents to 13 points or less.
The Wolfpack also has just 5 starters returning on that much improved defense though. Nevada has a very uncertain secondary though where they lost 3 starters. Purdue – and especially Rondale Moore – could feast on that.

Can Purdue break this one open? They have a bevy of talent but it’s hard to go out West in the season opener and win by double digits. That being said, Nevada has some issues at QB and has half their defense to replace.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Purdue -10.5
Rondale Moore was unguardable for a majority of 2018. He should be even better with a year under his belt.
